That makes sense. I think most computer controlled autos need a little time to learn your driving habits.

The 4 speed auto in my 2000 f350 responded very well to custom tuning. With the locking torque converter it has 6 kicks. The top two gears kinda turn into 4.

These little half tons are rated to tow more than my diesel one ton!

Rated...key word there...I'd love to try a back to back comparison towing a heavy trailer, old school PS F350, VS newer half ton...I'd bet the F150 would leave your shorts bunch up in some situations...

I say if the test is done, do it in extreme conditions like pulling up the mountains out West. I believe the old PS would outshine the new 5.0 and the Ecoboosts.

2.7 is fine for towing although towing less aerodynamic stuff sinks the gas mileage to around 15mpg ime. I average 18ish mpg towing our 3500lb boat.

Ecoboost would likely win since its also packing a 10 speed imo.

What's really crazy is the tow ratings for the new HD trucks. There ain't no f^&*ing way I'm putting 37K behind a Ram 3500 and driving a on public road.

It's not just about the horsepower/torque...suspension, brakes, etc...

I'll have to look up on tfl truck for the ike towing tests. There's a ton of great info on that site.

That's the real issue though. Loaded trailer to say 7000lbs, three more modern stuff is probably better.

Isn't that why they make semi trucks? ;)

That's the better part of what an 18 wheeler can haul...depending on the rig, most semi's can only haul (payload) 40-45,000 # legally (80k # total)

    Yes!
And as far as horsepower and torque...it wasn't too awful many years ago that a semi that had a Cummins "big cam 400" was considered a hot rod in the trucking world! Now they are getting that out of an engine half the displacement...and more torque too! :faint: Of course there is no way that 6.7 will last 1 million miles like a semi engine will....especially with the pedal to the metal like many semi's spend a good part of their time...

That 400 Cummins will make 400 all day....the 6.7 will make 400 for about 4 minutes. Either the engine temp or EGT's are going to peak and it will start cutting power.

Or, if you're in Michigan, you can plate them up to 166,000, I think. I'm sure that is completely unrelated to our horrible roads...

Edit: Probably not an 18 wheeler, come to think. They run 42 wheels / 11 axles up here, and I'd guess that is to get the highest plates. I have also seen a roll off truck set up to pull a trailer plated that high. Not sure I'd want that kind of a load that high off the ground, though.
