I didn’t look at any pics of the tree. I only saw the nutshells and they look like chinquapins. Could have been carried in by squirrels or other critters. In Nc chinquapins are more of a big shrub.
Also the term dwarf in the tree and shrub world may only mean slow growing. In 100 yrs the chinquapins I planted may be 100’ tall. They grew from 6” to 10’ in ten years.
We have a few Chinquapins deep in our woods. I'm not very familiar with them and the only reason I know they are there is our State Forester was surprised to see them while taking survey of our woods. I should have marked them because I'll never find them again...
I’m terrible at tree id, just ask poor Brad. But I’d be hard pressed to say that’s hickory. Those growth rings :0 Anyhow good job on getting it down and burn it like you stole it.
it must be some kind of mutant chestnut, given the various observations. I'll get a picture of the bark, from a split. I guess based on what I knew, I "assumed" it was hickory. A miss on tree id for me.
No worries Mike. Im interested to see what it is. If it was hickory it was a variety im not familiar with. I was loading split yesterday and found this Not sure where it came from. Mostly beech in the area, although i didnt look for other trees.
Your spiny seed husk, looks very similar to my spiny seed husk. For sure there's no beech trees around me. And, I've never noticed the cone-shaped flower cluster of a chestnut around here.
I cant say ive ever seen a chestnut tree. If i did, i didnt know what i was looking at. The only chestnut ive ever scrounged was horse chestnut. Here's the thread I Think i Cut Chestnut Today? There was a whole grove of beech where i found that husk. Beech husks are a lot smaller IME.
Was this chestnut bur at the storage area I’ve been to? It’s Chinese or Japanese chestnut for sure, but probably Chinese since they’re more widely planted. The spines are short and stout as opposed to American which are longer and finer.
Late to party but , I get a hickory or two a year at least. Definitely not a hickory tree ! Heck if I know what it is tho.
