Great grab! :smoke:But that's not your 'very first scrounge;' You previously scrounged on dad and neighbor. ;) That's fine, though; I find that a wee bit of hype adds to the reader's excitement.
So you're not new to tree ID? Reason I ask is that I don't see any bark there that looks like Hickory, and the leaves I can see look more lance-shaped than the ovate-lance on the Shagbark and Pignut here...

    Welcome to the forum xjcacher.

That will supply you with a goodly amount of wood. Being a neighbor means not far to move it too. Great wood on top of that.

Worry not about the 16" bar. We cut lots of wood up to 30-32" with no problem using a Stihl 290. In fact, most of the wood we cut the 16" bar won't reach all the way through but I have never found that to be a problem. I remember many moons ago cutting with a 36" bar and one longer (don't remember for sure but may have been 48"). We cut lots of 50" diameter logs with the 36".

Think it's a mockernut, the limbs are completely smooth and the trunk is very deeply veined and very hard the chain will almost throw sparks off the bark.

All I see is elms. Cottonwoods are only in the low spots near water for the most part. Usually surrounded by salt cedars, juniper bushes, and mesquite thickets.

Hint for posting a link while using your iPad.
    1. Go to the link you want using google or safarie
    2. Top center under the time, tap the name go the site you are on. It will turn blue, tap that and tap " select all" then tap again and tap copy.
    3. Go to the forum, write what you want to say and when you are ready to insert the link, tap after your last typed word and then tap paste. Example: http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/my-very-first-scrounge.5194/

Finally got it all split and stacked, it's 4 feet high 8 feet deep and 10 feet wide so comes out to just over 2.5 cord.

Not this year it's for 16/17 and 17/18. Only burn 1 to 1.5 cord in our fireplace each year.
