That’s mice that chew that bark off. Tree bark is a winter staple for them. I had wood stacked around a small Aspen tree last winter. The mice found their way into the pile, and chewed all the bark off the first 4-5 feet of the poor Aspen tree. They especially love bark on green trees and logs, like this one. Lots of nutrients.

    No way!!
That is exactly what my sticks looked like!!
I think it was Tulip tree as welL....a.kind of.aspen?
And yup...the tree fell just after the new year, and I got dibs on the wood. Mostly small stuff too.
    That is really cool.

Another reason to store green wood far from the house.

Wow, never would have thought of mice doing that. I was just redoing one of my stacks yesterday and found an field mouse nest but no evidence of that. Pretty cool.

We had a bunny under my stacks a couple months back, it would actually watch me in the yard and get close when I was out there.
Over the weekend when me and my 10 year old were out back and all the snow had melted I found it’s head by one of my stacks. Very creepy. Glad my son didn’t see it first. I’m thinking a hawk or a raccoon got to it.

I don't normally have many things in the wood stacks, we had a fair amount of skunks when we moved here, live trapped about 1 a day for a while, shot everyone of them while In The trap, let the smell fade, empty trap reset and repeat.

The one year we did a raised flower bed around the deck and put roses in them, that winter rabbits moved in and ate them down to the roots, now I shoot them anytime I see one, have one this year that is smart, seen it many times but have yet to see it in the scope...

Thankfully we have very few snakes, the misses has a deathly fear of them, so any unlucky one that sneaks in the yard gets taken out as well.

Also have a vendetta on the pigeons on the old silos, they get wise after you take out one or 2.

... Okay, most small wild animals don't last long in the yard :rootintootin::whistle::rofl:
