Hu, I had not heard that on the news. Did hear that the VA is getting more doses and having roving clinics on the weekends (Portsmouth and up N. Conway). They will also be opening for all ages plus care givers for veterans.

Next week supposed to get temps in hi 40's to mid 50's. Hope it gets rid of some of this (pic taken a few minutes ago)

    Snow pack on 3-5-2021.jpg

That is a 6' fence, so looks to be 16-18" of hard packed, ice laden and glazed snow pack. There is no hope that the berms by the deck, at the front of the house or at the roadway will disappear for a while - but I'll take some yard clearing (or at least paths getting really wide).

Still beating on this Wiseway install.

The Mfg's can't seem to tell me if the routing I need to use to get this bad boy set up will work right..

First it will, then maybe not.??????

I think that the 4" pipe at 45 degrees for 3 feet, then out the wall for 2 feet and then up 8 feet should SUCK pretty good...

If I can't get a more definitive answer from some body that knows the stove.....I may just scrap the idea and we will have a nice stove pad and no stove sitting on it.

I do not want to toss $1400 into a way to turn my house into a meat smoker....

I am loath to cut a hole in my new roof.....
It's out the wall and up....or not at all......

I researched them before USSC bought them out. There were only a handful of owner’s. they had a very difficult time getting them to draft correctly. Straight up was the solution, and then they didn’t perform as expected. I gave up on the idea so I don’t know if any changes were ever made to improve the issues.

I knew that US stove bought out Gary Wisener...

We finally found a shop that sells/has sold them and went to have a peek at the little devil.

After spending a couple hours at the stove shop I am pretty certain that most issues with the Wiseway are caused by the owners not following the install protocols ...

The UL testing lab is not going to certify a stove that turns the house into a bacon smoking locker...Same with the Canadian labs.

The one big mistake is trying to use 3" vent pipe......
Under all but ideal condition these stoves need a 4" vent pipe....

Extremely cold stacks take a bit longer of preheating to get the draft going.

The shop tech showed me some pics of installs that people had done and that DID NOT WORK.
The one that made me laugh was ......A 2 foot vertical pipe followed by a 4 foot horizontal pipe with a cap......
No wonder that was a failure.....4 foot horizontal is the absolute max you dare run with a forced draft stove (Electric pellet stove)

Huge masonry chimney's with the stove vented into it can be an issue too...

Too much cold air trying to fall back down and causing the draft to fail.

In watching the early video of Gary Wisener starting the stove shows a propane torch stuffed into the firebox and let run for a bit to preheat the stove and get the draft going.

Some folks have tried starting the stove with fire starter tablets and other methods.

The draft must be initiated well before fuel is added.....

Once the draft is moving air well....then fuel can be added and a small fire started and then allowed to propagate into a good rate of combustion.

The tech and I went over my proposed vent arrangement in depth and while not the perfect solution he was sure it would be quite satisfactory.

I need to run from the stove...up on a 45 degree. then 2 feet out the wall to the cleanout then up 8 feet.

I think the 8 foot rise is the key player.
A column of hot air 8 foot plus should do a good job..

Ideally the straight up shot is the Chit....but houses are simply not always compatible with this arrangement.

    In summary......
I still think that the vast majority of failed installs are the result of people simply not understanding the concept.

With a standard pellet stove...nearly anything that does not pose a threat of burning the house down will work.

Ideally the direct vent in regular stoves is not perfect and if the power goes off....yup it will smoke into the room a bit.....we have had that a few times..... No biggy....just a minor annoyance for 10-15 minutes.

Having a UPS to allow a shut down would be the answer.

I have decided to set up my proposed chimney arrangement outside and make up a little scaffold to hold everything and then test out the plan.

Also will heat the stove up good and "Season" it so the house don't get skunked up from burning paint.

I am still wanting to see one of these stove installed in a "Less than optimal" situation and observe the functionality.

    Likely not going to happen....

Do you have any concerns about the shells?

I recall the wise way is designed for softwood pellets. Do the shells behave in a similar fashion or do you plan to keep some softwood pellets on hand?

The shells do leave a lot of ash....and they are a bit of a pain to get them to slide down most hopper slopes.

In the regular pellet stoves the shells work great....cleaning needs to be done about every week on the big stove and the little one about every 3 days....

We want the Wiseway just for power outages.

I don't mind having the need to keep a half pallet of pellets or ??? so for those occasions..

We do use some pellets...but usually only for lighting the stoves.

The shells can be lit directly, but if you get a POOOOF in the roof it smells like somebody had a wreck in the kitchen.

Once the shells are burning hot the smell is a nice sweet smell.....but not at first.....it's like ya torched up the fry pan or fouled up the toast really bad.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT...That does not mean we won't try the shells...

The extra ash is a concern though.

The size of the shells after we run them through "Munchy" varies a bit and the burn basket on the WW is designed for the pellets.

    Here is a couple pix..

I just filled the Whitfield Advantage 2T .....The size and gradation of the shells are what we get out of Munchy......

Very little fines/dust and only an occasional half shell the falls into the catch tub by accident.

The Ash does not fall into the ash pan as I had to add a stainless steel plate with even rows of 5/32" holes into the burn basket (Versa grate) ....The shells would fall through the grate...at least enough to make a mess in the ash pan.

The ash collects in the areas on both sides and the front of the burn basket.... They would normally....but now little if anything ends up in the ash pan....
Even on pellets these stoves deposit most of the ash around the burn basket....

He picked up another ton today, our dealer said Heartland has reduced his supply. Interesting. Cash Larue . He has these, I hope they burn well. They come from window and door millwork, so I assume mixed hard and soft wood? Or are doors and windows all hardwood?

They look good! Never heard of them. But I’d think any pellet from millwork would be good. No punk and very little bark and other debris. Let us know how they burn!
