Hey Guys...I have come across a great deal for slab wood...It consists of Oak, Red Oak, Black Cherry and Ash....All pieces are 12"-18" in length and roughly 4" thick....From the pics they actually look real good....Anyone ever deal with slab wood and if so...How was it? Pick included
My sister burns some slab wood in her Drolet wood furnace...it works fine...just have to make sure not to load too many thin/small pieces in one load, things can get REALLY hot! Slabwood probably would work better in a modern stove than an old school one...those tend to do better with larger chunks...
Free firewood! What’s not to like? Stack, cover, good to go! edit, in my mind it’s free. Great deal doesn’t mean it was free.
Long as you know what your getting and the price is right, I see no problem with it. Never dealt with it myself!
I burn slab wood from a sawmill. The guy I get it from runs a very busy bandsaw mill. He won't sell slab wood or lumber unless it's dry or seasoned. It burns good since he only sells seasoned wood. I bought a load 2 weeks ago to help make it through spring. He told me he only had 2 loads left. I walk behind the saw mill and there had to be a couple of semi loads in a pile. Those are for next year. I have convinced him to sell me under aged wood because I was stacking it for next winter.
Burns just fine, a bit more ash left over due to burning a bit more bark though. It does burn faster than split cord wood, but if the price is right grab it!
Nothing wrong with that. For a longer burn fit it together tight in the stove. Flat on flat. Pack it tight,,,,as long as your stove can be adjusted down enough. Test that first with smaller loads.
I used to burn a fair amount but haven't run across any lately. Of course I don't really need any at this point.
I’ve burned several cord of slab wood, used to buy it in bundles 10’x4’x4’ for $10-15/bundle. I’ve used both with and without bark, bark less is much cleaner less ash but has terrible splinters. Both are hard to stack.
We heated this place all winter with softwood slabs back in '89 when we moved in out of necessity. I remember he charged $5 per half-ton load but you had to load it yourself. It sucked because they burned so fast but were grateful we had that option.
Yes, it tends to burn rather quickly which makes it not so good at night. In addition you will find you get more ashes. With this said, I've known many who have burned slab wood and did not complain. When I worked at a sawmill (many moons ago) we had people coming often to get the slabs and we were glad to get rid of them.
