Thanks. It was the shape of the top and the bark in the middle of the first pic that gave it away. Too bad the small one is punky. White oak bark doesn't let moisture out. Was this area hit with gypsy moth? When they went thru PA and kilt off oak, the reds lasted a lot longer standing than the white. And what was the prize?
It was hit by the GM. Several standing dead WO skeleton trees in the back woods. Too much work to get them out. Prize: your FHC membership has been extended to free lifetime!
Ive only seen 1 cottonwood in Toronto. Its related to poplar and the pieces I had were really light so check if it is very light wood then you can narrow down and rule out other species
