    I have single strength(distance) sunglasses

I have progressive glasses for reading and general use.

    No bifocal experience.

My prescription is not very strong, since having cataracts removed about 10yrs ago.

I've always worn bifocals for 49 years- since I was 8 years old. Wearing them is second nature. Never tried progressives.

I tried progressives and I could never get my head in the right position to make them useful. Fortunately I wear contacts and readers most of the time, only using glasses first thing in the morning and late at night. The next time I got glasses, I chose bifocals, and have continued to do so for 10 years (or more). My first pair I was smart and requested that they take the bifocal up to about the middle of the lens and they worked well for computer work. The last time I got new glasses, I forgot all about that, so this pair is a pain to use for computer as I have to tilt my head up. My left ey changed dramatically last summer, so I need to get another pair, but am waiting to see if it changes back before I do so.

I also have several conditions (not cataracts - although I've developed those in the last couple of years) that make my vision distorted, as opposed to fuzzy. So that may have something to do with my issues with progressives.

My mother only uses single strength lenses for her glasses and takes them off for closer tasks. My dad only does bifocals - so maybe it is a family thing.

I know people that love progressives so I think it is very individual on how they work for a person.

Wow, that is really young to start with bifocals. I mean, I've worn glasses since I was 5, but bifocals I didn't start needing until I was in my 40's. What kind of condition causes that?

Being 8 years old at the time, I really don't know! I have always worn them, didn't wear glasses all the time until I was 14 or 15 years old-could get by without them. Vision is poor both near and far, although I have no other optical issues. Optometrist told me a few years back "Your eyes are fine except for the fact you can't see without glasses!"

I can’t clearly see my toes, have had glasses since I was like 13. Had contacts for years then one day they started burning horribly every time I put them in, tried a couple new pairs and same thing. Eye doc says that happens sometimes and there are new ones I can try now. I need to go the bi focal progressive route. He recommends going with progressive lenses. I constantly look far and near up and down all day long. I’ve really noticed the need over the past year. I just hate the thought of bi focals.

I went with regular readers when my wife convinced me that my arms were not going to get any longer. I still use them for reading and computer work, but use progressives for general everyday use and work. I even have a pair of progressive sunglasses. I can read my truck dashboard, chemical labels, etc. and am not fishing for readers all of the time. Never tried bifocals.

There are several different brands that you should be able to try to see which ones you can tolerate. I had to switch brands years ago because of the same issue. Then last year they discontinued the brand I had been using. The doc ordered trial lenses of a different brand before committing, just in case I had issue with their formulation.

Progressives have always worked well for me. I tried bifocals and found them annoying.

These days I am wondering what's next however, as I am finding myself doing lots of up close overhead work, and cannot see what I am doing.

I also have progressive sunglasses  mostly for driving.

    Having old eyes sucks.

Try getting your monitor down sitting on the desk. I had this issue at work so they order me a stand that can be manipulated to put the monitor almost anywhere you want. I had both of my monitors with the bottom edge on the desk. After someone else used my desk and computer, it was real easy to get everything back into alignment. I wear bifocals but I have one pair that aren't and I use them for computer work only. Neck issues for me as well with a regular height monitor.

My monitor is sitting on my desk and the bottom of it is only 2.5" above the desk top. My chair is as high as it will go and still have room to fit my knees underneath. Doesn't help that I have 24" monitors so I can see (without making everything so large I can only see a small portion of a sentence), which means there is a large area that needs to be in the optimum visual area.

Fortunately, all my computer use for work is with my contacts in and readers on, so the irritation of trying to use my bifocals is only a short time in the morning when I am on the forum and FB (before I "go to" work). My work monitors are 9-10" higher than my home computer's monitor. Although I can also raise my chair higher to use them, I still need to keep my feet on the floor so bifocals definitely wouldn't work for them.

Wear progressive lenses, take them off to read books & such. Have dual 32" 4K monitors on my PC but the chair I have has an adjustable back so I can just lean it back instead of tilting my head back.

Been wearing glasses since I was 14. The winter of 67-68 my vision went from 20-20 to 20-100 (my mom was very nearsighted so thanks mom for the vision & arthritis). We had moved to Milford summer of 67 and in the spring of 68 I was with my mom at the Bedford mall and she wasn't sure how to get back to Milford and asked me to read the huge highway sign about 100 ft away. I said it's all blurry. She hands me her glasses and boom the world is back in focus, had glasses inside a week.

Wore contacts from mid-90's to 2008. Astigmatism in left eye got worse, they couldn't find a lens that would stay put when I blinked so back to glasses.

A year ago my left eye started looking inward. What was odd was if I covered my right eye, the left went back to center, uncover right eye, left looked inward. Had MRIs, scans, looking for signs of a stroke, tumors, all came back normal. Full exam by ophthalmologist found no problems at all, said my eyes were healthy. All the docs said it's neuro-muscular but are unsure what caused it. I had Bell's Palsy in the fall of 2015 which affected the left side of my face. Ever since when I got tired or my eyes were strained, the left eye would be "off". The docs said maybe that could be the cause but could also be blood sugar related, mini stroke that left no signs so it didn't show up on scans. I've been taking Alpha- Lipoic acid 3 times a day (helps to regenerate nerves) and the eye is about 80% back to normal. The left eye has become very sensitive to light though so I got some night driving glasses that fit over my regular glasses and diffuse the white light of oncoming headlights to a yellowish tint.

Several years ago i was fitted for glasses, they were line less types, not sure what they call them. So, i brought them home, and noticed my neck was sort of stiff some times. Then i finally noticed i had to look up at my computer screen all the time, so i could focus my glasses, which caused my sore neck. I also remembered the girl who marked my glasses for the lens's to transition. I wear line less type of glasses instead of bifocals. She was short as all get out, so, when she told me to look straight at her i was looking down at her. When she marked my glasses, and i got them back, it caused me to have to look up, which was why my neck was sore at times. Its kind of funny how little things can really cause problems, especially with glasses.

"Having old eyes sucks" ... yes... yes it does... :headbang: I used to work with a lot of computer cut vinyl lettering and I could see, clear as a bell, cuts made in white vinyl, looking at it from about 12" away. It's a complete blur at that distance now (20 years later). I've been stealing my honey's glasses once in a while lately, to work on anything up close in the shop. Guess I think I can avoid getting my own... :heidi:

I haven't read through any of the responses/reasons for eyeglasses recommendations.

I had bi-focals for the period I returned to college in 2018 and absolutely despised them! I ordered them on the recommendation of the eye Dr. and still to this day wish I had not listened to him. I still have them and use them for playing cards and always end up walking into the other room to grab my readers!

With 2 pairs, one for close up one for distance, it works out fine.

The distance glasses will be worn while driving, especially low light or night conditions. As of yet, I am not required to wear corrective lenses for driving, but I don't think its too far away.

The close up are used for playing cards, reading, (duh!) computer surfing, any type of work projects that involve close up work....like hand tools, measuring; but not for jobs like cutting grass, firewood.

I don't mind the 2 different pairs as the distance glasses are left in the vehicle and the readers are always within reach or in my pocket if I leave the house.

And, if I forget to take my readers into a store, good f-ing luck trying to read something on any label!

    damm aging process anyway!

Hmmm, it might be operator error...

We request you to try the glasses on and move them around a bit and put them on the tip of your nose and the edge of your nose to see if it improves your vision since the progressive lenses need a bit of adjustment and time. and do inform us that if there is any part from where you can see the reading and intermediate vision.

Progressives can take a little bit to get used to. You have to learn where the best position is for differing tasks such as reading, computer, and determine the best position of your head and/or distance from an object for best viewing. For a lot of people, it doesn't take much time before they don't have to think about it.
