I was telling a boy from work about the club and he wanted me to see if yall could help him.
He has a epa buck stove with a 8" collar and he has 8" pipe running to the the themble. The themble is 6 " and he has his reducer in the pipe just before it gets, to the thimble. He has a 6 x 12 liner. His problem is draft and the question is would it draft better if reduced it just out of the stove and have all 6" pipe from there into the thimble? My answer was no and the only way I thought he could change it was ( and this would be tough) to change his thimble to 8 or maybe its where or how the flew is located. Whats yalls thoughts?

Do you have any idea what his overall chimney height is? Despite flue sizes that may be one of the weak draft culprits.

If the stove calls for an 8" then an 8" is the best. However, some have got by using a 6" but a 6" all the way up. His setup with 8" going into smaller than into larger just spells poor draft which means he is not getting what he should from that stove. But it would be tough getting a 6" liner in that chimney. Perhaps he should consider a new chimney? It is costly but we went straight through the wall (with 2" rise per foot of horizontal) then up the side of the house with 6" stainless. Works great.

Thanks savage I thought before I put the question on here the changing 8 to 6 was changing 8 to 6 no matter how you done it but I promised I would put it on here. You give me some good things to take back to him. thanks again

I have a Buck insert but I have an 8" liner straight off the stove. Chimney height may be a consideration and may be something he could add to fairly reasonable. The other thing that would be worth a try is using 2 45% pipes vs 1 90%. I think I would reduce right at the stove (just seems right to me because that's where the heat is for draw). Ultimately it would be benificial to line the chimney or a new one like Sav says. But it might be worth throwing a couple bucks on those 2 ideas I stated first and see where that goes.

It's good that the chimney is over the peak, but a little taller may still help.

Height is an issue. My family has been doing mason work for 60 or 70 years... So ive seen my fair share of chimney draft problems. More than one instance we had to redo some other crews work... Even though the chimneys were to code. Code isnt the final answer though ! Chimneys should all be custom and different to each situation. More times than not....we would repair a chimney on a house in the woods...where a good draft usually happens up higher :). Thats all i have to say :)

No its not all i have to say ! Lol. Ive seen too big of pipe or flue pipe cause bad draft issues as well.
I just had a fond memory of my late Grandpa... And my father who is still around. They would check there chimneys by putting there cigarettes into the firebox... And watching the smoke get pulled up and out :)
Just put a smile on my face :)

For sure very common for folks to use one that is too large and then lose draft. If you do the math, even between a 6" and 8" there is a tremendous difference in the amount of space.
