Ran my new 500i for the first time today. Wore a 36" bar with full skip chain and bucked a 36" pin oak trunk.
Problem free start. Pump the bulb a few times and pull. No choke. Great saw, no bogging down. I put it to the test and showed no mercy. Pushed it hard in the cut and it didnt bog down other than chain dulling up quick and had to stop and sharpen a couple times. Burned through a tank of gas fast IMO. Last cut dulled again and switched to 28" bar. Dull file and didnt feel like sharpening again. As ive heard stated this is the better bar for it. Itll get a better run on some bigger locust next week. IMG_4180.JPG IMG_4181.JPG IMG_4182.JPG
Lots of metal present. The chain saw gods were looking out for me as i didnt hit any! Although i did cut through a frozen section of "compost" in the crotch and think i did nick the ground once. IMG_4184.JPG

If you're impressed now, you'll really be impressed when it's broken in. Also I'm not 100% familiar with the efi on this saw, but all the powersports that are efi in recent years turn up the tune after a few hours of running. Then they really wake up. It's a warranty thing. I'm sure this saw isn't much different in this regard.

Barbed wire sticking out of stump. I didnt cut stump. IMG_4186.JPG
Couple nails. Pics from last week. IMG_4135.JPG Luckily none of my cuts were close to them although i did cringe a bit cutting near the guy wire not knowing the direction it went in the tree.

Awesome. I think that is pretty cool to see that guy wire and anchor inside that tree.

Glad that saw's doing it's thing well Brad, I know the one I ran was impressive. Also glad you only dulled the chain & didn't smoke it on that obstacle course. Happy yard tree day!

500 I snorts for sure. I've ran one and it reminded me of a 2100 Husqvarna or stihl 056 magnum power wise. But much less weight and better throttle response and anti vibe. I just don't get why there is a primer bulb on it, I'm sure it's for a good reason.

I was reading about the efi on this saw. The fuel injection requires pressure, but the pump is impulse operated. So it's got 2 fuel pumps in it.

Lookin good Brad. I think you'll really be impressed once it is broke in. My dealer asked me the other day if he should put my name one one. :picard: Told him I was happy with the 462 but he could put my name on another 261.

Did you do any noodling? If I were in your shoes, I'd want to get it properly broken in asap. I'm eager to hear your comments when it starts picking up a bunch. :dex:

No noodling. Well i did later with the 460 when i split a couple rounds (updated other thread now)
The buried dead limb knots seemed to do a number on the chain. My full skip chain came with the Laser brand bar so i think its cheapo Chinese. I have the other full comp Stihl chain, but didnt wanna run that as its for sale with the other bar, plus as you know it takes a LONG time to sharpen even full skip.

When this happens to you Jason, will you swap out chains, use different bar or saw?

I usually take 2 saws, switch saws when one gets dull, then when the second is blunt, I swap chains on both and continue. Unless its a monster, then I only have 2 chains for that bar, I don't sharpen those in the field unless its an emergency (so to speak, lol). Those long chains get filed at a different angle so the cutters don't dull as fast. I don't win the sprint but I cut longer without a chain swap.
I hear ya on the full comp. I'd almost have to have a grinder to run one on my long bar. 135dl would be a lotta filing!

What a great trunk and species for the maiden voyage! The splits will add up quickly there! You gonna noodle them down and take them to the yard for splitting or split them on site in the picture? That’s the tree right by the road in front of your buddies place isn’t it? Nice job brad:yes: I’m a bit jealous of you as I’ve been working for the last 4 days. Off for 4 days starting tomorrow, so looking to get some work in at the wood yard. Not sure I feel like playing in the mud cutting and hauling out of the farm fields:hair: Had an open neutral in the pole barn I found today and fixed. Nice to open it up and let it air out a bit!

It is that tree. I updated it in my pin oak thread. Rain today so no wooding. Tomorrow i'll do some splitting.

I don’t feel to bad when I hit the ground. I avoid it at all costs but it is the nature of the beast. Chit happens.

I dont often run the 36" bar and its not that hard when i do. The log was "cushioned" on some brush and snow which helped.
