Nice load there JB. Not much decent ash around here. Most seen are dead.

 

No limit on what you can take, the permit was free also.
I am hoping to get another load tomorrow afternoon, then limb up a couple of Oaks & a big Hickory. The plan is finish limbing about dark so no one pilfers my hard work before I get back in there, then go in early Saturday morning while it’s still froze up a bit, buck them & haul them out.

And what is wrong with a dead ash tree?

 

Do you have to mess with the limbs and brush or will the park deal with it once it’s done being picked over

 

Nothing at all. Wasnt meant in a bad way. The bad ones are too punky. Its nice to see one with bark holding on and his rounds appear to be cut from a green tree.

The permit says you are supposed to pile the limbs & gives details about pile size & locations BUT the state employees have dropped the trees on grills, paths, roadways & picnic tables so I just limb & pile the debris out of the way so I’m not tripping over it. Most of the other folks that have cut don’t even bother moving any of the limbs. In fact most just limb up the trunks down to about 8”- 10” and leave everything else. I’m cutting down to about 4”.

 

They are plenty green, I split some today & tossed them in the stove tonight, they were sizzling & pizzing water out the ends. Thought I would try burning some fresh cut Ash, I would not recommend it, I prefer well seasoned wood.

 

Always a surplus of people misusing public land! Sounds like even the state employees! I need to get to where I’m not cutting the stuff that’s so small. I think sometimes I cut as small as I do because I like to pile the brush up and when you get a 4” branch of any size, it can get a bit unruly to manage

 

Ya it's good shoulder wood, and you can cut green ponderosa in may and it's ready to burn by the end of October.

 

I have turned down a fair bit of ash due to ash borer. It is common east of here but I don't want to bring it home to our trees. Does it travel with firewood?

I used to bring a cord home almost every day I worked on trees, but then the owner got "wise" and decided to take it home instead. Last time I saw, he had an acre of wood chunks and logs and nobody to process it.

 

Yes emerald ash borer will travel with firewood. I've cut and split some infected trees and never saw an adult. But under the bark was a hundreds to thousands of "worms" that had not changed into adults.

I won't haul any ash 20 miles from where I got it. I believe the USFS or USDA requires Ash to be kiln dried above a set temperature and time to sterilize the wood of EAB.

 

Hauled in some white gold before the rain season starts.

 

Welp, there will be no more loads from the State Park until they whack some more trees down. Some fella went in today cut all the trunks out & shoved all the stuff he trimmed from each tree he didn’t take into piles with his skid steer. It would be tough trying to get anything cut out of that mess. Limbs & forks up to 14” were trimmed off & shoved into piles. Ash, Oak & Hickory, he took it all. Close to 30 Ash, 6 Oaks & 2 Hickories. I was rather bummed & pizzed when I pulled in @ 4:30 this afternoon. I guess I should feel fortunate to have got what I did.

 

White oak, high grade. better than red oak.
