Help with wood identification.

    Good evening , I found a standing dead tree the other day that I got about two trailer loads from. It burns hot but it does burn a little fast. I needed to cut it down to get two more locust trees I been wanting to harvest. Here is a pic of the wood spilt.

    Got me on this one. The split looks a bit punky with some spalting present. Some type of maple is my guess.

    I’m thinking silver maple but wasn’t for certain. Yes some of the spilts are a little punky but was bone day.

    I agree with Brad on soft Maple of some sort. Silver?

    Been dead awhile by the looks of the picture, but that bark screams some kind of pine to me!

    Yep the wood looks like maple but the bark looks like pine.

    I gave up on the wood identification, and have been trying to ID the gun in the background. :thumbs:

    Some type of pump shotgun maybe?

    Bark is a little odd for elm, but if you look closely it has elm characteristics. I'd say it's a punky American elm, otherwise it wouldn't split well.
