Giant oak along the fence line hung up. How would you get the left side down? It’s hung up in the surrounding trees.
Big gnarly mess. Gunpowder or just let nature take its course. Could toss a rope over it and try pulling with whatever you have.
That's a tricky one, unless you go up and cut the hanging branch's one at a time on the leaner your going to damage the other trees. Otherwise you are going to have to take the small trees as well, drop the leaning branch then the main tree.
I have been taking down quite a bit of stuff like that in the last few months but I certainly do not claim to be any kind of expert. It's kind of hard to evaluate from just one picture. If I was there, I would walk all around it, and view all side of it, because you can't tell for sure a lot of the time, by just looking from one side. However, based on what I think I see, I would probably take out a few of the small trees along with it. Maybe notch and cut a few of them but not completely fall them if they were hung up, then cut the limb in question on the left and take out a few at the same time, maybe. But you can't really tell, by looking at a picture. I could be missing something that would be a problem. Of course a bucket truck would be a good way to do it, and safer, because you could just whittle away at it from the top down.
I actually just tried pulling it down today with the John Deere 4020. I didn't get the chain up as high as I wanted. The tractor has a bucket on it, I had the bucket up as high as it would go and then used the extension ladder to get in the bucket, then lifted the ladder into the bucket and extended it from in there, but I chickened out (I used to be a roofer and we set up some crazy scaffolding doing barns and etc.), I would of climbed up in a heartbeat 10-15 years ago . (maybe if someone was filming it I woulda..) Anyways the tractor didn't budge it. I was hitting it pretty good, I got nervous of the chains and straps I had hooked together snapping and flying at my cranium.. I've been waiting for nature to take it's course but that's a LOT of btu's going to waste (and 20 yards from the woodshed!). I'm not too concerned about the other trees. The chains still up there, I like the idea of notching the other trees and then trying it. I may try that next. A boom would be perfect (and safe!) but I'm too tight to rent one. VERY CAREFULLY! All kidding aside, any more pics so we can better evaluate Softwood ? Id leave it for now. I understand your frustration as there is some nice wood to be had and being that close. Half day bucket rental is $150 around here.
It isn't worth getting hurt over, but I doubt it's there's enough wood to pay for a bucket truck or rent a boom lift just because you could use the wood. First rule, don't get hurt. Second rule, try not to tear anything up, repairs are expensive.
I have a few fence line trees that I have left for now, that I would like to take out, but they are pretty dangerous. I will probably wait for a wind storm. Plenty of easier wood to get somewhere else.
Can you pull from the bottom & get the butt end to come out? I prefer a strong stead pull from a winch when possible. 100' of rope + 75' of cable gets me a long way from the hazard zone.
Very hard to get a good feel from a picture so just spitballing here. Could you get a rope or cable on that section toward the bottom. Then just notch it and cut it like normal to drop it just as if the other trees were not there. If it comes down through the trees all well and good but if not pull the base with the cable you already had attached.
I'll definitely give that a try. If it's attached at the bottom I don't think it's by a whole lot. Not saying it'll work but it's worth a try. Not sure why I didn't try that before I started twirling the extension ladder around.. I'd like to get it down while the ground's still froze. I can process it whenever after that. The right (bigger) side of the tree will have to wait for a strong wind to blow it over, my 18" bar wouldn't even make it half way through it.
I'm about 1/2 tempted to take a ride & dump the big side just to hear the crash. I love the sound/feel of those big uns coming down. I may be slightly .
There was more attached at the bottom than I first thought. Pulled with the tractor again from down lower this time. Nothing.. May have to wait for an act of God now. But I’m too bullheaded for that..
Am I missing something? Did you even put in a face cut? I would be extremely careful with a tree with that much dead wood, A limb can fall and stove your head in.
Yes all the limbs are off to the side a ways of the splitting trunk. And yes I realize I should probably of let it be.
Try pushing up as high as you can with the loader. I'm sorry, I assumed the base was nearly broken thru. A wedge or notch would have been a better option on that low cut. Stay clear of that thing if you're gonna push it!
