One of our russian boar sows had a litter! We have 5 little bacon seeds running around now. I was not there when they were born, but I imagine a few didn't make it in the -10*F overnight temps. They are burrowed into the hay pile and doing their best to hold out for the warmer weather tomorrow. I will get some pictures when I check on them.
They're good. The big ones pack in a ball and the babies climb up on top and sit in the warm spaces between them. I'm uploading a couple of videos to youtube. I will post links when the uploads are done. We have been breeding these pigs for about 10 years now. We selectively beeed based on body shape, temper, mothering, food requirement, and cold tolerance. They don't need much food and tolerate cold very well. The mothers take good care of the babies and the rest do their job as extended family and babysit/protect/teach. It's not uncommon to see the boar laying in the sun or shade with the babies climbing all over him while the sows look for a bite to eat.
yep. We had 35 a couple of years ago. We are going to remove one of the boars from the herd. He has really long legs and an arched back and needs more food. We like more of a square body and lower food requirement.
