33* this AM we didn't get much snow mostly Ice about 0.25 inches on the trees looks like it is letting up now. Hopefully it stops and we don't lose power. A comfortable 72* inside with that load of Red's from yesterday.
Phone says -20 but Weather Bug says -16. News said we had a low of -23 air temp here. Locust in the stove and they are calling for rolling blackouts during the day.
Couple snow pics out back. Bit brisk on the tractor, but got the drifts & piles moved. Deck is cleared & doors are all cleared. Back to wrenching.
9* now...supposed to hit -2 tonight. Burning cedar and pine scraps in the boiler this afternoon....will load it down good with some BL before bed tonight.
45° going up to 59°. Might even go higher, then a quick change to 18° overnight. Too hot to start a fire so we’re burning good ole #2 until tonight.
That's the idea! We've got a couple cords worth of rounds to split in the backyard and an open invite to a friends farm to scrounge around.
19F Now. Had -4F this morning. Been burning oak, before the Vortex hit I was burning some maple I had for shoulder wood, but that requires cleaning out the stove once or twice a day. When it got so cold I didn't want to open the door. Question for you guys, am I burning the maple wrong that I get so much ash and coals, it looks like charcoal when I clean it out, not glowing coals?
The sugar maple I have been into burns down nice, been awhile since I had any soft maple so cannot comment.
20 out now and I have some white oak choochin along real nice. 5 overnight, got sugar maple, locust, white oak, ash and pignut hickory in by the stove so some variety of that will be for overnight. 72 upstairs above the stove room.
You below zero folks I feel for you.If your stoves aren't handling those temps consider a old Hearthstone 1 for next winter. It's made to deliver when it's below zero. They may still be available ( refurbished).I still have a number for my old contact.Next winter will be much worse than this one.The cold and snow may begin in November right through the winter.Get ready for a rough ride.
Thanks. The OWB was lit in OCT for our heating season. It'll be shut down as temps dictate...as late as May. No NG used here since Oct, but still paying around $10 monthly because it is available. And yeah, they've been here every couople of years to "change the meter". Last time, I called and also told the tech to look over there (at the OWB)....thats the reason why we don't use NG every winter! Thank you Central Boiler!
-4F here & clear. No wind, boiler stuffed with White Oak & big Elm splits. Heating is much easier without the wind.
About 8" on the flat, lotta drifting with the NE wind. No windbreaks from that direction. Snow on the ground is knee deep here. Not horrible.
Warm night here in southern New England at 32 degrees. It’s supposed to be in the high teens by dawn so I’ve got a mix of Ash, Black Birch and a couple splits of Locust thrown in for good measure.
It's 20 deg. here in Northern New England with temps dropping. They say we could get a half of foot of snow tomorrow. Pine and Red Maple for the relight, switching to Red Oak and Maple after.
