Red Oaks get so big, even the branch wood can be massive!!! For reference the trailer is 5 feet wide.

I'm not sure what defines 'northern' but here in VT I have loads of red oak. And white oak. And even chestnut oak, which is rare in VT. Might even be a few black oak on the property, I haven't really looked. I am not a fan due to the long drying time. Maybe if I can get 4-5 years ahead on firewood, I will harvest more oak.

Hello fellow hoarders. I just joined and can't resist commenting on my favorite wood.

I'm in Central Michigan where we have good sized (25-30") red oaks and something called "oak wilt". It's a fungus, and it's easily spread , and often kills the tree in about a year. I have so many standing dead red oak on my property that I will lose more to rot than I can cut, split and burn in my OWB in what remains of my lifetime. On the big problem ones that were closer to structures, I've had them topped from an aerial bucket, leaving the trunk standing and continuing to dry, while I work on what's on the log pile already.

Red Oak is slow to dry. I've had dead trees that I've dropped, with all the bark off them, dead for 3-4 years, and still at 30%+ moisture when I split. It's important for me to get ahead and stay ahead of my splitting. This is my first year with the OWB, but have burnt in a stove for many years.

Any way, please consider this my application to the Red Oak fan club!

Thank you Wolverine. With a name like that, did you come from the Mitten? I see you are a little east of here now.

Wolverine, it is so nice when parents raise their kids properly! :)

Thanks for the welcome Brad. This seems to be a fun and friendly place.

Chipmeister Welcome to the club. We love pics of all things related to wood. FYI if you put a @ in front of a members screen name it will tag them.

Was that color scheme done on purpose? I can see a big helmet painted on top of the cap!

While not as big around as some of the reds in here (I think it was 36"), this tree was 131 ft tall and had a log in it that was 60 ft long before it split. Log was used for flooring

Welcome chipmeister! South central Michigan here. Definitely bittersweet what you’re experiencing. Glad you have a use for the wood. Sounds like what happened with the ash in our state. Sad to see them go, but great stuff to burn!

WOW! Bet that made some noise when it came down. Made some beautiful flooring and with a great story to boot!
