Tropical Storm Isaias took this big limb off a tree back in August. (Pic from August) Broke off from a big rotten void Huge pin oak right next door to my friends where a lot of my wood is stored. Tree was marked for removal in October. Tree service had started removing it in October, but too tall. Been waiting for them to come back. Went to my friends to do some splitting this afternoon and it had been taken down. You can see my stacks in his front yard. Took a couple red maples too. 37" stump. Between it and the maples well over two cord. Tree service coming next week to chip brush. Cabin fever is driving me nuts so gonna do some cutting tomorrow. More pics to follow.
Bradley... I'm genuinely jealous. Cutting withdrawals have me shaking something fierce as of late. I took a leisurely drive for over an hour yesterday scouting for anything that might have fallen roadside, to no avail. All the good stuff is buried beneath mountains of snow it seems. Looks like you found the only easy score in the whole darn state right now Hoard on!
Imagine my surprise when i pulled up and wasnt expecting it. Ive been going through withdrawels myself...trust me. So bad i decided to trek through the 16" of snow to his back yard, shovel and split some rounds. (See other thread update.) I wasnt planning on cutting any but after looking at the pics i said screw it...big mess but some sawing will give me my fix!
We have had some really high winds this past week. I took a walk in the woods yesterday and saw a few new trees down. They are deeper in the woods than I'm accustomed to foraging, but you've inspired me. When the rain stops in a few days, I'll go out there and haul them home. I've burned about half my supply and need to start putting away more for 2022.

When i see big oak youre the first person that comes to mind. I wont get to the big trunk today. Gonna clean up and stage the brush for the town and start bucking. Problem is i cant bring the bucked rounds to the PA until snow melts. Wanting to use the used, new to me 36" Stihl bar i bought last week. It replaced a Chinese 36" one i never really liked.
You big tease. I wish I could do some cutting. My buddy has a decent sized box elder that is damaged that needs to come down. That tree will make a good amount of firewood, but it's just not accessible now with the snow, like pretty much all the trees that need to be made into firewood on his and my land parcels. Now that I think about it, I can and should cut the dead birch leaders back. Maybe I'll get lucky and some will be solid enough for firewood? I'll wait until it warms up a little, which should be this week.
Hit the score today. Took my time as it was quite the mess to untangle. Not the easiest conditions to work in. Just the big trunk and some wood near it to buck. May wait until the snow is gone to tackle the trunk. Staged brush off to the side. Tree guys will be happy. Less work for them. Had to get it out of my way anyhow. Four saw plan. 361, 261 and both 201's Pileated woodpecker activity. Lots of voids and ant cavities.
Looks like you made some great progress! I’ve ran into some of the woodpecker stuff this year too. Still burns, right? At least that’s how I see it!
Second time in less than a month ive run into holes made by pileateds. Ever see or hear one? Huge birds, noisy too!
Seen them several times. They can make quick business of a tree if they want to! Last winter, the family and I were taking a walk through the woods with fresh snow on the ground. Came upon a cherry tree with tons of fresh wood ships on top of the snow. Looked up and there were several holes pecked in the tree. Pretty impressive little critters!
