Few more hours and a few more trees! Out for about four hours today. Took down nice cherry and elm in pics then several small cherries to push back edge of field. Forgot to get a pic of pickup full of limb wood. Will transport the rounds later this weekend. Plan on a couple more hours tomorrow if it allows. Loving this weather for cutting!
Forgot to take pics today, but got out for another two truck loads. Cut a third but will have to haul it tomorrow. Cold, beautiful, and sunny for most of the time!
You’re winning in the snow count. We probably have 6 inches here. Got out this afternoon for a couple hours and took down 2 cherry trees and an elm. Got the truckload and whats on the ground in the pics, I’ll get tomorrow. Beautiful sunny day here today. Hope you get some snow melt so you can get back out. Are you able to catch up on some splitting & stacking during this time or does the snow have that on lockdown too?
Thats what i call a load of wood! Way to go sir! Me and the Ford are impressed. I can trudge though the snow to my stacking area at my friends where i have 3+ cords of BL rounds waiting. I suppose i could shovel an area around them to split. Nothing set up for stacking. Plenty of splits to be stacked though. Its been seasonably cold to colder and little melt happening. Couple 1" dustings have added to the total cover. Extended forecast didnt show much in the way of warmer temps that would help with the melt. Couple minor snow events in the forecast too. With the frozen bare ground i was taking advantage of hoarding and getting rounds on hand. With all things considered i did great. I did replace my well worn out boots so good excuse to get them broken in tomorrow. Yeah, it wont kill me. I get cabin fever and laziness kicks in. Ill post pics.
Desperate times call for desperate measures! You’ll be out there soon enough. We know you and your hoarding habits too well Well look forward to pics!
Got out for a couple hours today. Got one load of cherry and white oak and some more cut for next time. 3 loads out yesterday!
Haven’t been out to cut since Monday. Tuesday, I plowed along the woods to clear an area for processing wood and also plowed path to my wood yard. Worked tuesday, wednesday, and Thursday nights, and had some obligations yesterday. So I was biting at the bit to get out this morning! Able to cut and haul one load out before we headed over to my sisters for some pizza and ice skating with the kiddos! Probably go play in the snow now before it all starts melting.
Another great load. If mud sets in will you still be able to get in there? Kinda chompin myself. Snow again stopped my splitting. Dont know if ill have time to cut tomorrow. Some work and wood delivery.
I guess it all depends on how bad the thaw is and how long it lasts. If I have a few hours at a time to cut, I’m not against using a wheelbarrow or a sled to to haul my cutting stuff back to work and then haul the wood out at a later date. I did that last winter for a while and it worked out pretty good. Cut about 8 cord during a warm muddy spell, and hauled it out when it dried up.
Fell and got after I nice oak this afternoon with the family! Got the top all broke down. Made a fire for them too warm by (they wouldn’t take my word that helping me would keep them warm) Plan to finish the fun part tomorrow
First, I sawed up the oak trunk Then, I loaded up as much as I could for the first load. Then I loaded 7 big oak rounds on the bottom and topped off the second load with cherry. I’ll get the rest of the big oak rounds tomorrow. I think I have 5 or 6 left.
First thing I got today were the 5 oak rounds I had left from the trunk yesterday. I lifted the first four into the truck, but could not get the last one! I ended up halving it to get it in. Measured it before I cut it and it ended up being 22” diameter cut 16” long. Wonder what it weighed? So then I was curious how much smaller the one before it was and it measured 21” cut 16” long. It’s amazing how much some species weigh compared to others. I was moved the same diameter and length cherry rounds today and they weren’t nearly as heavy! Here’s a picture of the 5 oak rounds after I loaded them!
Some beautiful rounds my friend. Im able to lift rounds to load but ive found that sectioning them makes the loading and unloading process a lot easier. Pulled back muscle and disc issues plus a squished finger or two have me all the wiser. Old age doesnt help much either. When i was your age it didnt phase me!
Each year, I section more and more of what I cut! Age and experience is what makes you the wiser as you well know. Almost three weeks ago, I took father in laws trucks and my trailer to get rounds I had already cut. Very cold and windy. I was out there a couple hours. Had gloves and after a while, my hands got wet and started to ache. I took the gloves off and finished the job before heading home. Hands aches Terribly even after Getting inside. Aching subsided overnight but lost feeling in fingertips. Wouldn’t blanch and we’re slightly discolored. Wasn’t really sure what to expect. Kinda freaked me out. Skin started receding from underneath fingernails and now I have lost that layer of skin on all fingertips except for thumbs. Good lesson and lucky to have the outcome I did! Still learning when enough is enough
Got out for a few hours today. Ended up moving and restacking about a cord on the front to make this two rows deep. Next I split and stacked the following two pics. Wind blowing the whole time! Down to 10 tonight so I may try and do some cutting tomorrow. If not I’ll be back in the yard splitting.
Looking great HTC! Cold front came through here this afternoon. Cleared off and wind picked up. I could see my breath. Cold here tonight and tomorrow. Hoping the mud is frozen as im going cutting tomorrow as well. Hope the snow is gone. Good luck tomorrow!
