I’ve been known to point out certain trees to complete strangers. Something only a fellow hoarder would understand
I did it today to a wood customer...it was a Norway maple stump right next to where i delivered his firewood. I drive Ms. buZZsaw nuts when were in the car together...especially if im driving!
UPDATE: I got lucky it wasn't scooped up the last 4 days! Just one big downed log ... Bucked it up real quick ... Definitely not the best rounds in the world ... the log was quite twisted - but whatever, I was just pumped to grab some. Dont think im splitting these by hand.
That will split easier than you think, that big one in pic #1 will most likely split very well. I have had several narly looking chunks of Osage that split very easily by hand. It’s a nice find no matter how you split it.
That stuff is funny. It will grow about any direction but straight. But it really doesn’t split to bad other than it being heavy like concrete. It burns well enough that it’s worth it for me to cut all the way down to a 2-3 inch branch.
The key to getting straight (well semi straight) Osage is to get the 2nd & 3rd generation growths. Just leave the stumps & within a year there will be several shoots coming up from them. There are several lines of Osage around here that were cut for posts in the late 70’s & early 80’s that have grown back nice & straight, you get an occasional narly tree but most look similar in straightness to Black Locust.
I wonder if the same holds true for BL? It will sprout new growth from a stump and ive seen it on trunks of blown over trees. Although most i see are on the straight side. Does osage send leader roots to produce new trees?
I have not seen or don’t believe that Osage sends out leader roots like Black Locust & Honey Locust. If you doze out a Honey Locust you they will reappear like ants with more continually coming up, the only time I see Osage grow back after dozing out is from a large root that was sheared off close to the surface.
