True enough. There's book smarts and street smarts. Some have combinations, and some are skewed to one side or the other.

My ash bucket goes outside onto the concrete patio a ways away from the house and any combustibles as soon as I'm done filling it. It stays out there , lid on until I need to empty the stove again, at least a week later, when the cold ashes are disposed of.

Our individual town garbage receptacles are plastic and get picked up by the truck every week. Printed on each can it says " no hot ashes".

You literally have to spell it out for some people.

I have 2 ash cans. When one is filled it is put in the garage for up to a week when it is then transferred to a plastic 5 gallon pail and given to the neighbor for him to use on his driveway.

Someone I know put ashes in a steel pail with the lid on, but set them outside right alongside a cedar shingled exterior wall. Quite a bit of damage ensued.

Any hot embers in my ash pail are very small and don't amount to much, dont like wasting hot coals.

Funny you posted that, we just had one in the neighborhood, I was waiting for the newspaper article to hit. When our cold snap hit, my friend who works in a local Hard ware store said the "Duraflame logs" sell out like hot cakes! :picard:

Agree, but once my Fisher is lit, I very rarely let it go out. It'll stay lit till mid/late March. I'll pick apart the hot coals and push it to one side, scoop out the ash then push it to the other side. I get hot coals but my fire usually lights right back off fast with some dry splits.

Excellent reminder and perhaps I need to alter what I am doing to err on the safe side.

I do have a metal ash pail with lid. Once I clean the ashes out I put the pail in the middle of the garage floor away from anything on the concrete floor until its cooled down.
