Last week a house near here burned down because they didn’t handle their stove ashes properly. Don’t let this happen. I strongly recommend a steel can with a lid and a good handle. Treat it like it’s fire because that’s what it is! Don’t leave a pail of ashes anywhere inside or out on the porch. Enjoy the fire but treat it with respect.

Yesterday had to take the bag out of the vacuum cleaner and throw it outside. It picked up a live coal and burned a hole through the bag....

I can't imagine why someone would leave warm ashes inside anyway.

The slight warmth will cause the ash to convect up from the container. If the ashes from the indoor stove are warm they immediately win a trip to the great outdoors.

Ours either go in a metal garbage can outdoors in the woods which is just for ashes or dumped into the outdoor fireplace.

A good ash pail will have a recessed bottom making it safer then a "regular" pail.

I have a fire pit out in back yard and my ashes go out "Instantly" after they come out of the stove, it don't matter, rain, snow, hail, wind, those go out! No chance of burning house down ever.

So I just happened to have my buddies thermal camera. About 15 minutes after coming out of the stove.... sitting on the gravel.

Somebody I used to work with told me about his wife putting ashes in a plastic bucket and then putting the bucket in their barn. Twice. Luckily he found it in time both times. The part that made me chuckle besides doing it twice was that they both consider themselves intellectually superior.

I've heard that story "several times" through out my burning life. Remember, it doesn't matter how many Masters or PH'd's you have, that doesn't mean your smart! I worked with a few that had both and didn't know how a rubber band works! o_O

I was going post an article about the same thing near me.
On NYE, A woman and child lost their life because the husband emptied the ashes into a plastic tub and left it on the back porch next to the house.

My wife put a small hole in a plastic pail once, she said she thought the coals were cold. :hair:

Mostly seems to happen to the ones who don't heat with wood but for ambiance.
I've already seen a few chimney fires also this season in the news.

I'll admit that I put hot ashes in a ash pail with a tight lid and leave it next to the stove inside.
