Oooh, go GIBIR. So, finished the Pine leftovers in the drive this morning, then went to work on the one in the field. Had to come in for a break....I left my water in the house. Let's see, the far l/h stack is Red Maple, the next one is the same up to the lighter color stuff, which is Spruce from the back yard and the Pine from the drive. The next stack is Oak, the short stack next is Red Maple, then Oak on top of some Sugar Maple I got last year from the kids farmhouse (some might remember that thread), and the last one is all dead/down Oak. There's a 12'X3'X1.333 stack behind that of Oak from about 5 weeks ago. Behind the far left stack is another stack of Oak 16'X3'-ish tall from 'late fall of '11. I'm taking the pic from the pine I dropped across the field.
You guys stacking in cribs lined up... ... have got me heading in the same direction for the 3rd year wood I've got now. Get's plenty of sun and wind and I can cover the tops. I just can't go with the additional roof off the woodshed and not put gear under it instead of wood. Got to get some space in the shop. There... I said it...
I have a shed behind the pole barn that houses the tractor, my saw, and various other stuff so I don't have to use space in the woodshed. It's called a "woodshed" for a reason.
Hmmmm... could be the toolshed, off the woodshed... not really part OF the woodshed... won't even have a wood floor...
Got back out this morning and finished up the first Pine in the field, then took down another and got it c/s/s too. Not quite 1/3 cord so far from the 2 trees.....in the stack on the far left. Several more to take down back there, so back out in a little while for another hour or two.
Looks good PD. I'm really starting to get into the remote stacks too. Things around here are backing up right now tho... my ole back has decided to trip it's breaker again. Being stupid always has it's rewards... Lifted and twisted just enough over the last 3 days to set it off... Not like I haven't been here before. Nuthin new...
Now rest a few days. Heat on the back really helps. I like the gel packs that you can pop into the microwave for 40 seconds or so then put them on the low back.
Took down another 12-14" Maple a few minutes ago. I'd really like to build up the Maple supply for next year. I read it wrong and it didn't exactly go where I wanted, but it's out in the woods, so no big deal. I'm still trying to figure this stuff out,.....VERY carefully. There are a few more I can take down too. Sorry about the being stupid thing. Nice to be rewarded for it, though.
My wife made some little sacks with rice inside. Stick 'em in the mikey wave for a minute, and it's like having a heating pad on your .......whatever. They lasted quite a while too.
Instead of starting a new thread, I'll just continue the Maple story here. Cut it down Thurs. afternoon, and I'm still working on it. Because of that, you might think it's a big tree.......it's not. Bucked up a few rounds on Friday, and cleaned a bunch of branches from a couple other trees that were collaterally damaged. Went to Gaylord yesterday for some stuff and to take back the hole saw. Went out and bucked up some more when we got back. Got out today and c/s/s most of the larger stuff. It's now down to just about 6" and under with lots of branches. WooHoo! My favorite part. It's blocking one of the trails so I need to get it cleared.
This is one of the casualties when the Maple dropped. Big tooth Aspen? No matter, it's getting c/s/s.
I have had my fair shar of pines for the year.....I've done somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 since February!! Whites, blue and Norway spruces, hemlocks, a cedar....... The kicker is I have a lot more scheduled right through fall!! Good work Dave, I feel your pain. Weather has been hot and humid here too.......and some wisdom from my buddy Zap, veggie oil takes that sap off of your skin!!
Right. Veg oil, margarine or Miracle Whip works great. We usually us Miracle Whip and it makes the cleanup really quick and easy.
Like Dennis, we had quite the cool down after the storm came through. I'll get back out tomorrow and try to get the Maple done if the weather cooperates. There are a few more I might take down that are damaged from a previous logging back there, as well as one that I cut that hung up on another tree. As soon as I can, I'll be back over to my sis-in-law's place to get more Oak.
Soooo tempted to have a fire this morning. It was cool until mid-afternoon. I refrained. Instead, I went out and spent some time working on getting all the branches and small stuff cut up. Also did most of the rest of the main trunk, and now need to run the mower to clean things up better. Also cut back some other stuff that fell across the trail a little farther back to make it easier to get through there. I cut all the way down to a couple inches and I'll use those for small fires......
Looking good PD. Ought to be fun mowing that now. I always have enjoyed that type of trail work. Cut & trim... then head down in with the mower and see how many rocks I can find...
