I took the first arm off on Thursday. Went out by myself. I didn’t get as far as I had hoped, because I took the splitter out with me and had trouble with it. So I just loaded up the rounds I had bucked and headed back to the shop. Turns out the splitter issue was operator error. So I got it split up and filled the tote cage in the shop. It was heaped slightly, this picture was taken this evening I had help today that’s him by the tree for size reference. It sure goes a lot faster with help. I cut, he loaded. We did the splitting at the shop and put it straight into the rack . As I was taking saws to the pickup he asked “how many saws do you need for this job?” I replied “probably just one, but I’m taking four!” The tree yielded just slightly more than one cord. They look bigger standing. Probably some of my most accurate felling, got them both perfectly between the two little cedars and managed to spare the fence. The trunk that is left would probably heat my house for a week. I’ll probably go back for it after this upcoming cold spell passes. The 266 did the dropping and probably 1/2 of the bucking. 372 did a lot of bucking today but I got it pinched and had to rescue it with the 266. I guess I really only needed 2 saws for the job
Awesome wood! Great to get at it when there is no snow. Where is your snow? We got it about crotch deep in some places.
Great job sir! Much better working conditions than part one. Ive had to "rescue" a jammed saw before and was glad i had a second (or third) with me. Are you cutting the stump? Still some good wood to be had.
Yep elm of some sort. Actually the best sort of elm. Dry into the 20% range and splits easily and no bark
I guess the snow is coming tonight and clear through the weekend possibly with highs in the teens all week. Glad I got it done today
I’m thinking this branch is next on the chopping block. It is huge, and dead. Just haven’t figured out how to go about it yet. Being dead and pretty dry I don’t think it will barber chair. It’ll probably be a pretty full pickup load by itself. I’ll try to get a few more pictures and seek some input on how to go about it
If it were me, I'd cut a shallow wedge, bore cut & then just cut the trigger on the backside. Use the longest bar you have for a bit of extra distance. Looking at the pic I think it'll come down safely.
Exactly what I would suggest. Bore cut in about 3/4 of the way up from the bottom and cut down almost all the way leaving enough that it wont pinch. Then cut down from the top to meet the bore cut. Safe and fairly easy.
Kinda how I got it figured. It gets pretty horizontal farther out. I’m a little bit concerned that some of the branches out towards the end may hit the ground and hold it up and not let the butt end come free. But if it starts falling fast enough they should snap and let it come on down. The other concern is that I might have to do it while standing on the tailgate of a pickup to reach it
Ah, i think i'd keep your pickup as far away as possible, or, if you take a camera we could possibly see Tree Vs Pickup. Looks like you could get close to the right spot on the ground, and you could get away from it pretty fast and safely as well. But , yes do take some pictures. and, thanks for the ones you took of the other tree.
