Just bought a used Stihl 36" bar and full comp chain for my 460 (stock). I had been using full skip on my prior 36" bar. Is full comp pushing the limits of the saw or should i stick with the full skip?
I dont cut big wood that often...maybe 2-3 times a year so its not used a lot. If i did id buy a larger saw (660/661)

I'd prefer full skip with that bar and saw combo, but you may be able to get by with full comp occasionally 20201109_144050-1cropped.jpg . That said, I'd be more worried about getting enough oil to lube that bar. Not ideal for the standard oiler. I put a high output oiler in my 461 and run full skip if I'm using the 36" bar.

Thanks. Again, seldom used. Never really liked the Laser bar.

Love those dawgs MB! IMG_1684.JPG
I ran 28" FC with my 361 on some big sugar maple last Summer and it handled it fine. Ill have to check and see if the oiler is turned all the way up.

Anything @ or over about 36 and I use full skip. I can't imagine full comp, man it sure would be a LOT of sharpening! If you have a grinder, maybe. Saw will pull it but in the real big stuff the kerf will start to plug up w/ chip. For that reason, I'm out. The space w/ skip gives the chip a place to ride.

That being said, why would anyone use the full comp at that length? Is the FC intended for a higher CC saw?
I just wish the full skip was Stihl brand. Came with the Laser bar.
Wish i had some big logs to give them a side by side comparison.

Skip chain on anything 28" & up for me. Sharpen the chain you've got & give it a run.

I've never used skip chain and I don't think I've ever tried it. Full comp on everything I have up to 60". When you buy a new saw with a 36" it comes with full comp, at least my 661 did.

Just shooting from the hip here.. mainly personal preference. Watch some of these guys cutting aussie hardwoods and they get dusty chip. Full comp probably not an issue. Pulling long chain through a big conifer creates larger chips that can clog. When you square file/grind it comes out like this:

Carrying that out of a 36” (or so) and up kerf is the challenge. Different species create different challenges. Oak doesn’t ribbon like that.

Not saying only conifers do that. Maples (including box elder), poplar, apple, sbh are some of the wood I’ve cut (live) that also ribbons. Oak I have noticed has not for me.

Oak and elm seem to give a little tiny 1/4 length chips. They are the only two species that I’ve seen do that, no matter what type of chain you’re using.
I have a 36 inch setup that I used to run full comp 3/8 on. If the chain is on the aggressive side, I can barely feel it start to load up and not feed on its own. I believe that’s why it’s recommended as the line where you should switch to skip.

On that particular saw and a 36 inch bar I would be running skip.

It needed sharpening. I started after my morning coffee and finished by lunch. It wasnt too bad hand filing! Decided to keep the full skip and sell the other with the old bar.
