One of my neighbors had a huge tree in their yard that was dead and threatening to fall on their shop. Fortunately, they have the equipment to take it down. Chainsaws and an excavator got the job done in one afternoon. We started counting the rings and figure the tree was over 250 years old. Looks like we all have some work ahead of us.
Wow! Sorry to see it have to go. They look like excellent mill logs. I’d have a hard time using it all for firewood.
My friend's family runs a woodworking shop so yes, we will mill many of the logs into thick boards. The base will be cut into rounds and made into coffee tables and such. Branches and stuff will become fire wood, and everything else will be one heck of a bonfire! I'll take some pictures of the bark. Maybe someone can help me identify what kind of tree it was.
Nice, nice, nice! Whatever you can make of it will help serve as sort of a tribute to it. Looking forward to the pics....even if it is just some cut, split, stack (CSS) pics. Most importantly, glad the job went well!
The only kind of trees that I've seen with that discoloration (from metal) as seen in the one pic is oak. Doesn't look like an oak though from what I can see.
That looks like a big one for sure!! I'm thinking white oak? It definitely has some metal in the trunk, might be tough to mill that one log. Would like to see the end results of the milling
yeah definitely would interested in knowing what species it is. fun fact, (assuming 250 years old) this guy would have been a little sapling around the time we were declaring our independence as a nation.
OK folks. Granted there was a lot of ivy growing on the tree, but here's a picture of the bark. Can you identify the type of tree?
We spent the day pulling the larger branches out of the pile, and cutting them into logs to be split later. Having a huge excavator helps.
