    Does anyone recognize this soapstone disk? Two cut recesses, and an iron ring in the middle. About 1 1/4" thick, 10" in diameter.

    It was in our basement and I just thought about it today and brought it up. I was thinking part to an old soapstone stove. I used it as a trivet today to cook some chicken stock up.

    Could that maybe have been a cover? Rather than using cement they used soapstone?

    WORD From The Woods

    I’ve shared this before, but it’s been on my mind lately with so many of us working on fire salvage operations.

    James 3:1-12

    Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also:though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

    How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.”

    As loggers, one of the biggest things we struggle with is our language, whether it's a four letter word or an off color joke or maybe just gossip or bad mouthing someone we work with. The things we say can be extremely powerful. We've all seen the devastating impact of forest fires over the last number of years. As this passage says, the tongue is like a small flame that can set a forest ablaze. We can never take back the words that pass over our lips. As Christians, we should not be known for having a foul mouth or bad mouthing others or spreading gossip. We should be know for speaking the truth in love, and speaking kindly of others whether we like them or not. Most of all we should be known for proclaiming Christ to all men, whether it be by the testimony of our lips or the testimony of our actions! Always remember that as Christians, we are representing Christ to the world! A fig tree is known to be a fig tree by the fruit it produces, in the same way a Christ-follower should by known by what is produced from their lips.

    God bless and have a great week! -Terry

    It might be a soapstone foot or bed warmer. Notches may have been for a handle. Found this image on the net.

    Last weekend I had brought a pickup load of Ash to my brother-in-law. Today my uncle asks if I have any firewood to spare. Ummmm sure. Got a face cord of Ash, another of Black Birch, and another of Red Oak that was dead standing way back when I cut it but dry enough to burn now. Have your pick of any two, but not all three LOL. I still have plenty for this season and the next, but I will have to catch up with some more hoarding soon to maintain inventory. I like *knowing* I have enough more than thinking I probably have enough.

    WWW was looking for lodging for a 3 month job, this is it. WOW!! The crew will love the big kitchen (man, can they cook!), more comfortable for everybody and less than hotels. I'm jealous. WWW will get a blow up mattress or take the couch some nights, keeps talking about fishing a nearby river. Have at it boys!! Also enough room if their wives and kids want to visit.

    17,500 (13,692 American dollars) buys a cabin in Deer Harbour on the east end of Random Island. Deer harbour was depopulated decades ago, the cabin is accessible only by boat. Definitely a getaway from the so called civilized world. Random Island is about 22 miles long but only the western half has human population nowadays, the roads don't go beyond Hickman's Harbour and Lower Lance Cove.

    I'd love a chance to visit Deer Harbour, I bet there might be a few interesting buildings still hanging on from when it was a functioning village.

    A still, 3 degree walk with the dog this morning in the squeaky snow. Inside work today and turn that stock into soup for lunch. Maybe a grilled Reuben to go with it.

    :jaw: Wow. :bug: Really, WOW!

    I'd like for WWW to send me an application for employment, please.

    Not for the actual work crew you understand. More so for just hanging out at the ranch...making sure the coffee is made, keeping watch on the place while they're working, having a cigar with my feet up!

    :rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:
