Putting the Old Girl back together. Can't continue to sit on this; I need a machine if I am going to work these hillsides for wood. The replacement parts may get down eventually. I also need her out of the shed so I can get the Buick in there and see about the torque converter lockup issue. I was looking at tractors yesterday but the only tractor I can afford is an old one like I have which will probably have its own issues. It was a bit of work installing the trumpet by myself but I managed. It was also cold in the shed today; there is no heat in the shed.
I’m ignorant when it comes to tractors (grew up in the city). What is a trumpet on a tractor? Do you blow the trumpet to get the cows to move out of the way?
I have a heat lamp out in the garage. I keep it 55 in the garage but sometimes I get cold so I turn the heat lamp on me while I’m working, it’s a big help. I hope you can get the tractor up and running.
On the 8N, the trumpet is the part that the axle shaft goes through. If you look, it spreads out where it is attached to the centre housing and I guess they thought it resembled a trumpet. I took everything off together; unbolt, slide out of the differential. It made it heavier to handle but that meant not having to disassemble the brakes etc. This tractor has been down way too long. I am sure I was using the tractor with the broken pinon bearing seat for months or maybe even years. My parts will eventually make it down and I will worry about it in the future. I may end up using the tractor until I die with part of the bearing seat broken. The differential was repaired; my BIL helped me there; we took it apart and replaced the broken spider and replaced a spider gear that had a broken tooth. I am not worried about the differential. Yes, I hate almost half of the front bearing seat being missing but I need to haul some wood and I need to turn the gardens in the spring.
In the photo you will see a circular opening. There are two of them. The one visible is for the PTO; the level to engage and disengage the PTO is at that opening. The one on the other side is an inspection port. The running boards also mount using some of the bolts at those openings and they are buggered up. I will have to drop the hydraulic pump to repair the holes because I need to drill out the holes so I can put in inserts. I thought about just covering the pump but it is not that hard to remove the pump. Metal shavings in the pump could damage it and result in more repairs later. I found out about the differential and the bearing seat because when I pulled the PTO shaft I found the piece of the spider arm in the bottom of the centre housing. It was a matter of one problem leading to the discovery of another problem. I originally went in to just work on the lift. Since I will have the pump out, it is easier to replace the pressure relief valve on the pump when it is out of the tractor. I have a new one ready. I also have the inserts for the bolt holes. I stopped working on the tractor because I had a replacement for the centre housing. Since that replacement isn't coming any time soon, I decided to move forward with repairing what I have.
