My neighbor asked me to drop a standing dead maple that was on the tree line in her back yard. Tree was about 14” DBH and about 150 yards from my processing area. The wood is a little past prime but not rotten. I will let it sit in a stack and probably burn it as shoulder wood this spring. Sorry no pics of the tree but I am including pics of the splits and am looking for opinions on the state of the wood. I guesstimate about a 1/3 cord of wood.

That’s some good looking wood!! In the past, I have used standing dead to add to THIS year’s wood in order to allow some of my oak to stay in the stacks another year. Great way to accelerate into a multi-year plan by avoiding burning your firewood before it is ready. Good work!!

Nothing wrong with that! And, pretty much onsite, as well.

Looks good to me Thom. Bark off, some spalting typical of dead/down maple. Cant say ive cut much in the way of SD maple. Ive scrounged SM that been on the ground for a year plus and still decent.
Maybe good for Spring. Did you check with MM?

Looks good to me I love Maple like that splits like nothing and lights easily. Any standing or dead Maple will have a little spalting or rot its Maples only downside.

Most of that is primo stuff. Only a little spalting that I could see. If that spalted wood still splits and don’t break I burn it.

Looks like a tiny bit of punk starting to set in, but still good to burn.

I was going to suggest a mm reading. I bet after split it'll loose moisture fast.
