Picking up some wood that was down on the road. Some branches and a chunk from the top of an Alder. Will get some more on the next trip. About a 2 mile round trip for the little Ranger. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
it’s what they use in Norway and Sweden for smoking fish. I need to learn how to identify it because we have three species native to where I live.
Not a huge Alder fan myself but I have a friend who loves it and swears by it and also dislikes Doug Fir, which I love. The more, the merrier I guess!
Fresh caught salmon or steelhead barbecued on an Alder plank is very good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The Alder grows like weeds around here but I’d grab all the Fir I could get. Mostly Alder on my place and I haven’t bought a wood permit from the state in several years. They have done some recent clear cutting nearby so that might change if they open that up to the public. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My alder is a bush and has multiple stems, largest I have see was at "The Sanctuary" at the Russian and Kenai rivers when salmon fishing. The stems were 8' or so. Alder is a favorite for smoking salmon here in Alaska.
Have to remedy my former statement. I do indeed like Alder. It is probably my favorite smoking wood. Excellent for fish, chicken and most pork. It has a milder, sweet smoke. Mixed with some other woods like Pecan, fruitwoods or Oak, it stands up well for Beef.
Your alder is a tree if I remember correctly. Funny what a few thousand miles north does to a good tree.
