I make my own meat treats also, I don't trust that crap from China.

You are smart to do that. We bought a dehydrator from amazon for about $50. The treats are so easy go make and the cost is almost nothing. My dogs love them and they don't get sick. I won't buy any food products from China. Did you hear on the new where someone over there repackaged outdated meats to show current dates then sold them to major chain fast food places in china? There are many dogs with kidney failure and death from eating tainted food. Even some domestic jerky and sweet Potato treats have been found to have salmonella. I won't feed any food with most grains or any by products. Blue or similar foods are good.

I need to get a dehydrator, I just use cooling racks on cookie sheets in the oven as low as it will go with the door propped open, takes 4-6 hours, kind of inefficient in the summer, but not too bad in the winter when I'm heating the house anyway.

You will like it. Put the meats in a freezer until almost frozen, then thin slice and load the racks. Easy

Thanks again folks. Like I mentioned earlier, it's a weird deal that I didn't ask for, but I like it so we'll see where it goes. As far as training and stuff, I figure I'll just try to get him used to a leash and socialize with other dogs as much as possible. That's the nice thing about my current dog. After about a month of living up here with me, she figured out the program and she's just the easiest dog ever now. She frolics when it's time to frolic and she comes when it's time to go. Hopefully she'll impart some knowledge to the new addition.

Hi Dave. Forgot to answer your question...his given name is Judge. I've modified it to Judgy (I like two syllable names for dogs for some reason). Still trying to find out what the status of his owners. Is the husband coming back anytime soon from Alaska? Is the wife coming back? Do they even care about their dog? Woodwidow made a good point so I called the sheriff's office and told them the situation just in case problems arise down the road. They've had some minor dealings with the owners so the deputy I talked to basically said nice job. Anyway, I'm gathering up some fishing gear and heading up to the little lake up the road from my place. I'll have to snap a pic if I can get the dogs to be still for a couple seconds. :seasoned:

Just got back from the lake. Judgy did great. He didn't go swimming but he did wade in and cool off every now and again. My dog (Lexy) refuses to have anything to do with water beyond maybe getting her feet wet to get a drink. They both just investigated the shoreline and rolled around in anything stinky they could find.

Here's the lake I take them up to. It's called Rainbow lake. Not real big but some decent fishing if your in the right spot at the right time (I didn't even bother today, just wandered around with the dogs).

Here's a pic of one of the few times the dogs were in the same place at once.

End of the adventure. Judgy found some shade and cooled off for 5 minutes or so then it was time to load up and go home.

Good times were had by all.

Yeah HD, he's just a really happy dog. He get's along with not only my dog but every other dog he's come into contact with so far. He looks like one of "those dogs" that I'd never be interested in owning just based on the stigma, but he's definitely got me won over. I'm trying to not get too attached just in case the other shoe drops and his previous owners come to claim him (which would certainly be their right) but I still haven't heard from anyone so we'll just keep on keepin' on for now. He ate a huge bowl of food when we got back from the lake, along with a big strip of elk steak, and is passed out on the porch in a food coma right now.

Your new friend looks happy. If he hasn't shown you an aggressive side, you just might have a buddy for the rest of his days. I don't know how someone can just abandon a dog. My two do so much to keep me involved. I enjoy interacting with my pets much more than many other interaction. My kids all love dogs and each have two.

I'm with you savemoney. Abandoning a dog would be like abandoning a member of my human family...unthinkable. Judgy has shown zero aggression so far. The closest he comes is when he wants you to pet him, he walks up and puts your hand in his mouth and just stares at you while he wags his tail.
