They are always looking for squirrels so I'm sure that's probably it.

I've got sort of a weird situation so figured I'd run it by you folks for some feedback. Long story short, some folks down the road from me are going through sort of a nasty seperation. The husband took off and went to alaska for work, the wife is a little wacky and she hasn't been around for about a week now. Here's the problem...they have a dog that just sort of got hung out to dry. He's been coming up to my house lately so I feed him and now he's sleeping here. He's a total sweetheart and gets along great with my dog (well, he gets along great with her, she just sort of tolerates his existence). I'm wondering if I should adopt him? I'd have to get him neutered and get his shots updated and I'm not really too keen on having two dogs, but I'm also not too keen on taking a dog to the pound either. It's a quandary for sure. Here's a pic of him...he's an American Bulldog.

He's a good looking boy Trundle :) I havent owned one but there are 2 of them down the road here and are very friendly but the male has a weird thing with bringing you baseballs and will not let you not throw it for him :hair: :D

Found this on the net and i'd give the guy a try at your place if i was you

    Temperament:
The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks require a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder; Good with children; Good with pets

Go for it. Sounds like the poor dog has already been through enough.

Don't ask DaveGunter. I know what he will say. More the merrier. I think that would be Campinspecter's answer too. It is a real commitment to take on another dog especially if you don't know if anyone will be wanting him back. If you decide to keep him, I would let the pound, police authorities or animal control know that he was abandoned and that you are taking him in. You don't want to be accused of stealing a dog! If you spend a lot of money on him and he bonds to your family, you don't want him taken away by previous owners.

You could try and find a no kill shelter somewhere near you, or you may have two drive 50 or 100 miles.
The next thing is finding a no kill shelter that actually has room for him.
Sweet dog like that would get adopted eventually by someone.
If that doesn't pan out I would say keep him because if you take him to the pound he may get euthanized in a week or 2, but he" might "get lucky and get adopted from the pound right away.
Obviously the owners don't care much about him or they would be out looking for him

Thanks you guys. Great advice all the way around. I took him and my dog for a hike and based on how happy he was, I'd guess it was the first good romp he's been on in awhile. Still haven't been able to get any info on where his owners are (other than knowing that the husband cut out and headed for alaska). Like Woodwidow mentioned, it would be pretty tough to bond with him then have someone show up and take him back. I figure for now I'll just feed him and give him a good home and see where the chips fall. I've got some freezer burned elk that I'm gonna brown up and use for dog treats so at least he'll be eating well.

Guilty as charged. He's such a fun loving goofball it's tough not to like him. I think I'll just consider him a member of the family until someone tells me otherwise. I can tell you one thing for sure, he's a big fan of elk steak!

Again, guilty as charged. I'm gonna take him and my dog up to the lake tomorrow. They can frolic around to their hearts content and I can throw a line in the water and try to catch dinner while I sip a beer. Sounds like a win/win situation in my book!

When the dog adopts you, you have to know that is the best! I would keep him in a heart beat. If you think he is safe, then what do you have to loose. Ck TSC or local pet stores. they have cheap clinics. You could also ck to see if he is microchiped. Once he has settled in, get him fixed. They calm down a lot after that. and thank you for taking him in and feeding him. No animal should be neglected or left to go hungry.

Shoot I started bonding with a dog that was only here for 4 hours, when I called the owner it turned out the dog was 5 miles from home, glad he had a tag

Good for you Trundle, sounds like it was meant to be, just go with it and let it happen. If it was me I would definitely speak to the woman owner when I could, just so it won't develop into a difficult situation, she will most likely be grateful...hope it all works out for you and the dog...what's his name?

I make my own meat treats also, I don't trust that crap from China.
