I have installed real and fake cameras recently and almost everything has come to a scratching halt around us... The police even said the neighbors are feeling far safer and the crime rate on our block has dropped a lot since a bunch of us have installed signs stating cameras on premisses. I got sick of it so we are saving to finish the back yard with a privacyfence as well as gating the driveway off next year.
Pete, good move my friend. You have every right to put your head on your pillow and wake up knowing things are not different from before. And it is much better when the neighborhood is organized. Ever since I lighted up my yard and have kept dogs, so far ( fingers crossed) no one has taken anything from me. Also I don't know of any robberies at any of my neighbors homes up the road.
Brian, you bring up a good point about using chain link fencing with a carport. You can get a good carport for $795-995 and they put it up. You still have to provide the level place but that usually is not a problem. For a carport, I think I'd rather go with the wide models rather than the more narrow models but probably no wider than 18'. For people who live in a town or subdivision, this could make a big difference in storing their wood. In addition, for those subdivisions who don't want wood stacks. I doubt they would holler about something like that.
Well, the boss already granted her approval for the carport idea. Our neighbor is concerned that our wood is closely stacked next to their wooden fence so putting up a carport to move the wood into wasn't a difficult sell. When I tell her I'm gonna put a chain link fence around it, well, that might get interesting... The neighbors already think I'm a bit eccentric.
My neighbors think I'm eccentric too but that does not bother me at all. I can not control what others think so I'll just keep on doing things my way. Good luck on this project Brian.
I think I'd worry about locking the doors and not leaving the keys in everything first before worrying about my firewood!
We had a car stolen while I was in school in Philly in 1991. Now we live in a small town of 20,000, but everything gets locked around here.
Dogs, a big yard light, and 3 motion sensor lights seems to keep most away. If that doesn't work, I'm out the door as soon as anyone pulls in the driveway. Not that I'm all that scary........
Anyone ever hear of an alarm (sound system) that's recordings of snarling pizzed off dogs scratching at the door to get out? Set it off with motion sensors? I'd think it would get thieves to move on.
y Small town of 20,000! We have 2700 here, but we also have many towns all clustered near each other. I have lived in near big cities while in the service. Makes me too nervous.
My preference would be to live far away from civilization, but reality dictates I have to make a living and feed my wife and kids, and I need a population base to draw from for that.
I love the thought of being warm, whatever the D A goverment does and that would be # 3 on my list other than food and water. My wood is protected by 25 -06 lol Bring on anything !!
The more eccentric/crazy people think you are the more apt they are to leave you alone. IMHO at least.
When we first bought this house 18 years ago, I was away from home quite a bit and the hedges around three sides of the property really got away from me. I felt bad about it and was planning to really trim them back after a family vacation. As we were packing up, I was sick and running a fever, and one of the neighbors gave me hell about the hedges as he was driving down the road. When he got back three hours later, I had about 60 feet of the hedges already pulled out between my house and his with my 4x4 Blazer and a tow chain. He looked at me and the Blazer and the chain and the pile of hedges, shook his head, and said, "Well, when you trim hedges, you really trim hedges." We never heard anything from those neighbors since about our property.
