Are scrounges harder to come by in your area these days?

We got a wind storm going on now. It hit all of a sudden around 8:30 or so last night and not supposed to let up until later tomorrow. Gusts of 60mph. I’ll be keeping an eye out as I run around the next couple days. Be watching the town dump tree pile also. :binoculars:Gotta be something showing up, I mean coming down

I'm located in the wrong part of York County.

I look on CL or FB marketplace. Not sure why, I have a bunch to cut at my sister's house. Guess it's the thrill of a good scrounge. Havent seen much, just the usual, "you get free wood if you help clean my yard up."

There's less scrounges posted on FB and CL now.

    Winter and snow.

That said, if I get really ambitious, there's a tree service in Milwaukee I could hit up their stockpile of rounds. This guy even appears to know how to cut rounds to consistent and ideal for me looking rounds. Honestly, if I had a bigger trailer, I might do this and really make a good trip and make it worth it. Literally drive up and take it from his woodlot. I could stop and get some Popeye's Chicken on my way back home too while I'm at it.:)

It would be easier than cutting it on my own, but that's good fun in addition to work and future BTU'S.

Winter for me is usually slower for actual good ads for free wood but it's the only time of the year I really want to scrounge. I hate doing it in summer, despite there being the best stuff available then. But it seems like more people are fair weather scroungers as well so a lot of that stuff doesn't last long.

I went weeks, maybe even a couple months without a solid scrounge this season until one guy posted a vague ad on facebook for some free wood, which turned into basically enough for me to replace everything I'll burn this year and then some, because that vague ad failed to mention this was an entire acre or more lot being cleared of prime hardwoods, all up for grabs. So I guess my point is I'm often discouraged by lack of available free wood but then it tends to just suddenly change on a dime. It's happened that way every winter for me so far.

Pretty hit and miss around here. I’ve been busy on my mother load of locust lately so I haven’t needed anything else.

there’s at least a couple other scroungers around here so the good easy stuff goes pretty quick.

when times get really slow I take out an add in CL. I can usually get a couple scrounges from that.

Really good if I had more time to get out there! (Stinking work getting in the way!) was going to go out tomorrow, but ground blizzard and wind in the 50’s.

Should still be able to get a load or two out this weekend. I’ll post if I do!

I got desperate like that one winter. Had an old woman call me up who had an absolutely massive maple fall and cover practically her whole yard, and it was up against her house. She basically thought I would cut and remove the entire thing for free because I wanted firewood. I cut what I wanted and left. It was the type of tree you'd need actual equipment for, not just a guy with a truck and chainsaw. I told her numerous times before doing any cutting that I'm just one guy, not a tree service, and I'd only be doing what I could.

She called me back a month later, obviously forgetting she had already called me, and told me "I had another guy come out but he left and never came back!!"....Yeah, that guy was me.

There’s a lot of wood available around here, I actually see a lot go to waste. But I see wood stacks at homes I’ve never seen b4. More people using fire pits and staying home.

Seasonality. Less tree work gets done in the winter, unless a storm takes down a lot of limbs.
I accumulate during the spring, summer, and fall, and stash the rounds until winter, when I split it all. I've seen a few Craigslist ads nearby, but I haven't answered them, just trying to split my backlog.

I had a similar experience in 2018. Posted an ad on CL looking for firewood. Get a call from an elderly gentleman saying he has a bunch of blowover wood from a small tornado that hit that part of the state. Too far for me to go. Get a call a few weeks later...same guy. Two months later...him again.
We'll be old some day. Thats if we make it that far. Quote from my late uncle!

lol, yeah I actually felt kind of bad for this woman, obviously being elderly and clearly not too financially well off, but I still like to think I did my part in lightening the load for that giant tree for whoever came to actually clean it up. Or, maybe 4 years later it's still sitting there, who knows!

Oh yeah, I’m on the village board and also good friends with the village maintenance guy. He usually lets me know if something shows up that I might be interested in. I don’t get much out of there, but once in a while there’s something worth while. I’m not the only one that watches it either

Like I said earlier. It just keeps coming!! Got a call from a lady I've known since I was in my early teen's. She had some tree's taken down. Come and get it. Most cut to length but looks like some noodle action with the 462.
