So when these logs were first dropped off I was thinking, oh yeah cherry! Then I saw the end grains and thought wow that’s some interesting oak. You guys ever come across oak like this?

I've seen certain areas of Oaks look like that, mostly crotch sections but not to that extent. Looks like it was a sickly tree.

  4. ive had quite a few red oak blocks come in like that from the guy that delivers firewood to me i kinda like em pretty easy to bust

Looks like a reaction to a canker, or some other kind of reaction wood, wound response.

Never heard of that. I’m in NJ though but doesn’t mean someone couldn’t have planted it

If those crumpled leaves laying atop the wood in the bottom pic belong to that tree, they remind me of Willow Oak.

I've seen plenty of oaks full of big black ants and black dirt/compost. Usually red oaks. Took this one down at my mom's. This round was 4' or more from the ground and the rest of the stump was just as hollow.

I cut up a Hackberry a couple of weeks ago, and didn't see any ants at first. But then basically only in a couple of the rounds, I split them open and found the whole nest, thousands of them. I split the wood up real good and shook and scraped them out, and that was that. I hope I didn't mess up, because I then stacked that whole tree on the porch for next fall burn. I figure I left about all of the ants in the field where the tree was.

I've always wanted to start a fire in a stump like that! Drill a few holes at the bottom for a rocket stove affect. :coldfire:

No ants anywhere in those logs and not a live oak. They aren’t found here
