I have an antenna in my attic, and get few (4-6) stations. It varies. My installationis not very sophisticated, and I feel no need to improve it yet. We turn on the box once a week max (wife likes The Voice), sometimes we don't at all for a month or more. Life is good that way. Never had cable, never will. Internet, we have a phone plan with the two phones for $80/month total. Unlimited internet, and it doesn't take too mch research to figure out how to teather off of them. So for $80 we get our two phones and unlimited internet. With that we stream movies off of Hoopla (we watch a movie most Sunday evenings), which is free from our library. That meets our needs fine.
I wish i had a nickel for every time I've heard that. I tried a number of y ars ago. I don't recall the brand. But the antenna was one that was flat and hung on an internal wall. Maybe it's time to revisit.
We only have our phones for internet, and we'll bounce from 4g to 3g to no signal. Last year they were burrying fiber along some roads a couple miles from here, so they may get close enough one day to have other options. We've tried streaming some....at times it can take 1.5 hours to watch what's usually a 1 hour show. Sometimes we don't ever get to the end......
It isn't worth it!!! My wife has a couple shows she really likes but after I explained to her we could have had a "brand new Jeep" for what we paid the cable company in 15+ years, she understands! We were going to be at $3000.00 a year for TV!
Mike, I HIGHLY recommend you contact this man! I did! He's awesome and will make a personal detailed list of your needs! antennamanpa.com I'll show you in a bit.
This is what he sent me in 1 e-mail Hey David, thanks for verifying this. I took a look at your reception and you have some options. Stations from Salisbury, MD are fair and stations from Philadelphia are weak. I don't think you'll get Batlimore or NY stations as most broadcasters transitioned to very directional antenna patterns to keep their signals "within the market" and not spill into other markets. Analog used to travel a lot further than digital as well. You have two main options for an antenna setup. The first is something I'd recommend if your main concern is ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, and the other major networks from the closest market - Salisbury. The antenna would be fixed and you wouldn't need a rotator. The second option would be to use a large high gain antenna on a rotator to switch between the stations from Philadelphia and Salisbury. This setup would be more expensive but would gain you Philadelphia channels. Some of the programming may be duplicate but there are a lot of diginets from Philadelphia you might like. It all depends how much TV you watch and what channels. Take a look at the chart below. It shows the channels you'd likely pick up. Click on the station's call letters in the second column to see the subchannels you'd get from each Slisbury channel. See if those channels would satisfy your TV channel preference. You'd definitely get ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, Me-TV, Antenna TV, and several others. If some of the channels you see from Philadelphia (main diginets) are of interest and not duplicate of the Salisbury stations it might be better to invest in an antenna rotator. Otherwise you can go with an easier fixed antenna setup pointed towards Salisbury. Let me know what your preference is. I was going to recommend Tyler. I subscribe to him. I learned how to terminate RG6 on his channel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mike, this guy has about 100+ antenna posts and will find all the towers available for you. Can't hurt to reach out. I have a couple more links I've been digging into.
In terms of antennas....we have one of those "fish skeleton" ones up on a pole/roof. Tried several of those inside ones with varying distance ranges....they didn't do diddly.
I have tried a couple of outside so called long range that did absolutely nothing. I had appointments (yeah, plural) set up with a guy that would come to you site, throw up and antenna and show you what channels you would get. He said he wanted $100 for the effort; I said no problem. Every appointment we had, he was a no show!
I just bought this one yesterday, it got Fantastic reviews and "Should" work well for my ranges. I'm about 53 miles away from Salisbury, Md. Not to mention this area is FLAT, real flat! I also have the Delaware bay between us so no obstructions in the way, Trees are minimal.\RCA Antenna Outdoor Yagi Satellite HD ANT751E
Dave, try this one from RCA, it even shows you a map and direction. https://www.rcaantennas.net/channels/
I switched from one of those old 18' long Channel Master antenna's to this CM-4228HD EXTREMEtenna 80 | Channel Master a couple years back...it does the same job as that old CM monstrosity did...mounted on the same tower, about 30' off the ground...some of our stations are 45 miles away (straight line) The CM needed some pieces parts, and was getting crusty, didn't make sense to fix it...the local antenna guy said this new one is the model that he installs 95% of the time in our area...the new one was sure easier to haul back up the tower!
I looked at a few of those larger antenna's and considered them very carefully. When my wife and I discussed this, she said she was gonna do the Roku thing and I said fine but I'm gonna do an antenna for live news and weather. With that said, Phila is just about 95 miles as the crow flies and Baltimore is about 75. Most of the Maryland stations for me are 55 miles and in. Also, it's not uncommon for us to get 70+mph winds during a Nor-easter had I've had "many" 90mph+ gusts. When I was a kid, and there was a lot of antenna's around, after a storm it was common to see a bent to $#!T, broken, fallen, Non existent antenna (that used to be there) all over the neighborhood. I went with this one seeing what it's "supposed to do", it's reasonably small and didn't set me back but $50.00. If I get 6 stations clear, and some weather/news, I'll be happy because Chrissy can watch all her other bull$#!T on Roku.
