So my wife says I have to much wood stacked at home! I currently have this years wood and about 4 more years stacked neatly at the end of our lot about 150 feet from the back of the house. Plenty of room to add additional rows without taking up any usable space in the yard! In addition to my wife complaining I currently have been working a new locust score with at least 20 truck loads to bring home. what do you guys tell your wives when they complain wood related issues?
I had a wife...once! Ms. buZZsaw doesnt complain much only when the driveway gets too cluttered with wood. I process it ASAP when it gets home but the splits dont always leave fast enough. Not much stored here and what is is mostly out of sight. As long as the yard is tidy i dont see an issue with it (of course im on YOUR side). If need be DH i can talk to the Mrs. and put the good word in for you.
I say: There are many worse habits a guy could have. He who cuts his own firewood warms himself twice, Henry Ford its the number one testosterone producing outdoor activity for men (she might find this positive or negative, but that’s your call) it will keep you young!
aint that the reason (or one of them) why we hoard firewood? Ms. buZZsaw asked me back in November what i wanted for Christmas. My response "A romantic evening with you or a new chainsaw" She replies, without missing a beat "What model saw do you want"
I simply handed my wife the propane bill & said you can multiply this by 4 or 5 depending on the winter or we can have an abundance of neat & orderly stacked firewood. Also I would find a second place to stack more of your hoard.
I find it helps to point our how nice wood heat feels this time of year. Smaller heating bills paid to the man shows the value of what you do for the family.
We filled our fuel oil tank 3/20. First time in 4 years. That reinforced that firewood is good. Not that she's ever complained.
We go thru 1 tank ( 450gal. ) of propane a year but we use it for the clothes dryer, water heater, kitchen stove & furnace for back up.
My wife has said that before and i've given her all the above reasons why we ''need' 'more wood, lol. But, this year i think it will really prove out. I've had a few health issues this past year and they are about be fixed.. Which will just about bring my wood cutting in 2021 to a stop. Foot surgery being one, kidney stone removable the other. The foot fix is the biggie, about 6 wks or so recovery. BUT, when i look out back at that big stack of wood out there, all covered and dry, i know its not been cut, split, stacked in vain!! Every drop of sweat, every day, i worked at it will all pay off in the future. In fact it already has and is paying off in keeping us warm and dry ask the cat or the dog, lol. My wife agrees also, lol.
Mine don't complain as long as it's stacked nice and out of the way. Shes not a fan of the wood pile I am cutting next to the driveway, but as long as I clean up after it's cut and the house is warm and she don't have to do any of it she never complains about it.
My wife only complains about the wood when I build my fires to hot, which is kind of often in this shoulder weather 28 to 35 in the morning and sometimes highs of 55 or 60 degrees in the afternoon. I had to let the stove go practically out today, just fired it up again a few minutes ago. I just did have a few coals left and the stove was basically cold. I stirred around and found a few coals in the ashes, pulled them to the top and threw a dustpan full of cedar noodles on top, followed by some kindling, and small splits. Now I will have to be careful the rest of the evening not to get it too hot. But it will be 30 in the morning and I don't want the furnace to kick on.
That's funny, but totally opposite here. When I do wood work in the yard it seems to have the opposite effect. I will say that my wife is not a fan of firewood with any sort of tarp or tin or recycled too covering. She likes wood in a wood shed. That's why I built my shed that will hold 15 cords, or at least 3 years or wood based on averaging 4-4.5 cords used per year with our insert. She's fine with holz hausen based on her reactions to seeing other FHC'ERS holz hausen . She's also ok with nicely stacked pallet rows, but again, no recycled top cover. I had a 3+ cord pallet stack that was 6 pallets long behind the garden, and between the new wood shed and the little yard shed. It had a black trucker tarp on it that I tried to keep looking decent. It was stacked nicely, but I had to keep the plastic down, so I used 4x6 stringers that I got from my buddy. Nope. That wasn't up to her standards. There's about a half cord left down there in that stack. That trucker tarp will be reused, just way out of sight over at the wood lot. With my wood shed, I'll probably only stack any other wood outside of that only if it's oak, then let that sit out with no top cover for a year before it goes in the shed for 3 more years.
This answer. You wanna be warm or broke, you pick. Gotta say, I've never gotten a complaint though. It's almost like the city, just turn up the stat if you're cold.
I have no problem either, mine actually encourages and comes with most of the time. I think she might have a bigger fire addiction then I have wood cutting addiction. She is always in favor of any wood processing tools I want too. I’m actually using an alternative storage place for the overflow. We actually went out today to see if there was any to grab. There was nothing worth any effort so we passed. We spent the day hanging out by the fireplace and making bread, cinnamon rolls and Mississippi pot roasts.
I forgot to say that my wife loves the wood stove and the heat it makes. She's also a bit of a pyro. So this makes sense.
I'm with you, my wife is impressed with my wood and loves the heat that it brings. I like the silly school girl look she gives me while she watches me work with my wood.
