I was at Lowe's Home Improvement the other day and they had a really cute little splitter in stock. It was priced at $699.

It's a push plate design, so that's good. 13 tons, that will do. Our old didier is only about 12 tons and it splits everything.

That handle location though. Seems like it's in the wrong spot on the splitter.

I did a lot of splitting with my little 5 ton electric; it didn't like knotty wood though.

Is that the hydraulic oil tank on top of the cylinder?

I see a no warranty DHT splitter in the background. I wonder if Lowe's knows...

I don't know. I wonder what the arrangement is between DHT and Lowe's. Lowe's may be discounting these in the future.

I think Lowe's probably owns them outright along with any issues after the sale with Frictionless World/DHT under bankruptcy protection.

Why is the push plate design better?

If this splitter has a reasonable cycle time, I might be interested.

I only paid about $100 more for my 25 ton County Line on sale 2 years ago. Thats a lot of money for that cute little thing IMO

It's a little faster when you have two people splitting, the splits push off the end of the splitter. You can't damage stripper plates because there are none. If a split doesn't split and jams on the wedge it's a little easier to slam it off with the wedge on the end of the beam. Can't split vertical though.
I have a little 5 ton electric I bought before I bought a 21 ton hydraulic and it had no troubles splitting all the easy stuff. It would handle anything you would split with a maul easily. Big knots and/or crotches were/are iffy although sometimes you'd get lucky and it would plow right through them on the first try. I guess you could make the comparison of splitting with a 2 pound maul vs a ten pound. I only have pine, maple and oak, so ymmv.

I don't know if I like where that control handle is either. Maybe the splitter is small enough it is NBFD. Piston looks a little short, but that could be an advantage too.

I have mostly Douglas Fir and Pine. I currently split with an x27 and Isidore, and a 5 ton electric. I am sure it would work.

Wouldn’t take long for that hydraulic fluid to heat up!

Because the push plate design allows you to clear rounds that don't split all the way through, even at the end of the cylinder's stroke. You just load up another round and it will push the stuck round off.
