We live in the wood bugs are a part of life. Other than a few lady bugs and some stink bugs this year insects are not really a problem. The wood will all be burned by the end of the season. As far as a fire hazard goes we are on a wood burning web site we all know there is accepted risk involved in wood burning.

Hoytman I did not stir anything up with the wood stove in the ice shack. It is something we use all the time you just gotta be smart about it. There has been no ice fishing here yet. And it sounds like there isn’t much up north.

    Well said Warner. :salute: :)
I for one am tired of the “hate to tell ya... sorry I blah blah blah... “ soapbox posturing culture that has negatively affected this forum and America in general.
    Short rant over.

Your stove (pics and write up, et al) and basement supply of wood is phenomenal Warner :handshake:

    Carry on. :salute:

Thanks Eric, this is what has works for me. I have no delusions of it being “the” way. I’m quite sure that some of my practices would not work in other locations. It’s important for people to figure out what work for them and go with it. Letting someone on the internet tell you something isn’t going to work don’t fly here.

No problem with bugs in wood here, i have wood in the house, been doing it a long time.
Wood stove in ice fishing shack sounds like a good idea to me as long as its done correctly.
If your system works and you feel comfortable with it then good for you.

I know you didn’t...I was sarcastically mentioning you because I thought it was you showing a stove being used in an ice shack and someone went off all “safety” on you. No harm intended. Yep...I live in the wood too...know all about the way of life...sort of like mice. LOL! They need to eat too...and a warm place to live. LOL!

Nope nope nope. All mice get exterminated. They are the work of the devil. I can deal with a few bugs but I try to be proactive against the mice.

I think we all can agree that mice suck, one snuck through my defenses and chewed on two of my slot car tires.:(

A customer had a super duty less than a year old totaled from mice damaged. She got kicked in the head by her horse almost died while she was recovering the truck was parked in the barn by the gain store. Those mice had a field day. It was in the middle of the summer. The repair order said “the truck will not start and there is a bad smell in the cab” it was BAD!

Wow, that's terrible. I had to replace the carpet in my old Bronco after the meeces had their way in the truck...even then still had to use various procedures to get the remaining smell...but totaling the trucks wiring! :hair:
As far as keeping wood inside, I have posted here before that my original plan was to wheel a rack of wood at a time (~1/3 cord) into the furnace room from the attached basement level garage, after trying it one time, that was it...the amount of bugs was crazy! The racks stay in the garage now...its not heated, so most of the bugs stay dormant, until they get to be part of the BTU release :D

It was more than just the wiring they got in the heater box. The interior was all permeated with the stench of liquified animal.

I guess it depends on what part of the country you live in whether you get bugs or not. 40 years of no bugs here.

Don’t move to SW Ohio then. Many generations of folks here have learned to live with the bugs if they burn wood and keep it inside. A lot of it depends on what type of wood you cut and the shape it’s in, meaning good solid wood or not. Here you take the good with the bad, which is part of a decision as well...to burn or not to burn.

With woods on 4 sides of my house I wasn’t kidding about not killing all the mice. You do the best you can...that is all.

Black rocks have no bugs. LOL! Just lot’s of ash...:headbang: That’s one part of :camping: that has it’s pluses. If you think a little wood ash in your stove is bothersome, try the black rocks. I empty ash sometimes once to a day and mostly twice a day when it is real cold, but sometimes only add fuel once a day or every two days when it is warm. Trade-offs to everything. Then again, I can burn either. Options are great!

All the wood I bring in is dryer then a popcorn fart and has been in the wind and sun long enough to be dry from the environment conditions, I see very few bugs in my wood even when its outside. They prefer moist dark conditions (don't we all).
