More finds from my grandpa's shop

Is the county paying to demo? Doesnt seem right y'all get to haul scrap but they pay bill. Or they passing bill on to y'all?

 

they are but they're also putting a lean on the property for the demo cost. Basically my dad and I are getting everything we can before the demo starts. The company that got the bid is paid to pretty much clear the lot.

 

I've been at the landfill when I was there the same time someone was dumping the contents of an apartment clean out after a tenant died/moved to nursing home. Boxes of years of accumulations, mementoes and personnel effects. No one to claim it so it lands in the landfill.

 

Any time you spend rescuing vintage stuff like that and/or especially family heirlooms is well worth it.Doing various remodeling/demolition in commercial buildings over the years has netted me some interesting finds,while on the clock too I might add...

What right does the county have to tear down buildings on this property?

 

I'm guessing taxes not paid, lien on the house, unsafe building? Unfortunately, we have too many of these types of stories here in Maine, as you know Nate, with so many older folks who have worked hard their entire lives, but have just barely gotten by. Then, either they retired or their company closed. Income stops. Sad... doesn't even begin to describe it.

 

We've seen another side of this. Watching a loved one's reactions (unavoidable) as their life's possessions are put out in a yard sale... of course expecting all kinds of $$$ from the sale of their priceless things... only to find out most brings only pennies.

I guess the cure for all of this is we've just got to stop getting older...

 

Exactly. His taxes were paid but there is one lien on the property (from a bank loan) and the house was condemned due to being let go for so many years. Ever since my uncle's diabetes got real bad he basically stopped taking care of the house, property and even himself. He was forced to retire and that made it even worse.
Don't get me wrong, the house needs to come down but the way the township has gone about it is messed up. The township he lives in is known for having some "crooked" committee members who like to bend the rules to get their way. My uncles property has highway frontage and is also zoned commercial and something tells me they have their eyes on it. They'll pretty much own it after they place the demo lean on it. They've fought my dad all the way through this process. He even tried to pull the permit to demo it ourselves and they wouldn't issue it.

 

That's a really sad story but I am glad you managed to pull that artifacts out there as they are really cool!

 

People get old ,need help but don't want to ask for it , they don't want to be a Burden ,because they have been self-sufficient during their lives

 

County ordinances that say you cant have an unofficial junk yard or have your property all hoarded up. They exist in cities.

I don't see how that is legal for them to tear it down and bill the owner and not allow anything else. I understand the junkyard thing but if the family comes in and says basically, "hey we are cleaning it up" give us a chance it doesn't seem right.
