Trail clearing for me happens every year, next year it will be up top where there is a chit load of dead pine down. I only have two trails open in that area and need more since the dead pine is always coming down across the trails I have. Today I did get another area ready for two face cord, covered more wood so the covers weren't laying around the garage and before that I helped the wife on a few small jobs. I also covered another two face cord (seasoned) just incase our neighbor comes up short on wood near the end of winter. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll start getting more Ash on the ground so I can start filling the stacking area I got ready today.
I didn't take the camera with me but I spent a good part of the day at the outside fireplace burning down pine and some smaller branches, the back gully and the area out front were the target of the cleanup today. The part of the gully to the west is a ton better but the east part of the gully at the base of the hill needs a good cleanup, hopefully I can get some of it done before any big snows hit.
Nice that you have a firewood buffer that has allowed for the trail clearing this year. I have been having the same thoughts about staying ahead of the weather. I cut right through the winter and the snow but I have really been enjoying the cold weather without the snow. Makes for good cutting weather. I like your trailer. Looks like a stout little setup! Keep up the good work. Been enjoying you thread
It took me a few years to get the wood inventory for that buffer with Backwoods Savage behind that push but once we hit three years ahead on the wood, I started to widen the trails. They went from a walking trail to a yard tractor, utv and the big enough for the Mahindra 4540. I like this weather for cutting too but I have a few more areas that need some cleaning up so I'll finish that up. We have a bunch of hills to deal with so once the snow gets deep, I stop on cutting any trees. The trailer is perfect for the size of the trails going up the hills we have, the trailer is made from a company from Canada. I get the name pf the company tomorrow.
Just didn't want us to see you lounging around the fire, enjoying yourself......I know you were working hard. Glad you had a good day......
This area is just off the new area I opened up last year (I think) there was a snapped off downed rotten cherry and some dead pine I pulled out of a tree. With this area cleared of the downed trees and branches, it will allow me a chit load more room for storing snow from the driveway in the winter. I also started clearing a path to the neighbor's after he said it was ok, there's more limbing up of some pine before it's tractor ready. I took around 10 trailer loads of wood/branches over to the reducer and had a nice fire.
Yes but not for long, with the warmer temps and the rain coming in it will be gone. With the rain coming in this weekend, I hope to c/s & burn a bunch of pine, hopefully all the work starts tomorrow.
I did some splitting on 12/11 and brought that over to the outside fireplace, it was all White Pine. Today I removed two smaller White Pine (one pictured) by removing the first made the trail wider which will make it easier when plowing in the winter, the second Pine I removed will allow me to work in that area with the tractor so I can get at both piles of pine. The first two pictures are from yesterday and the last three are from today.
I did a quick hand file sharpening and dropped the rakers some, it was nice for softwood. Tomorrow I'll be by the outside fireplace getting rid of a bunch of pine. We have a whole bunch of pine in log form and some in rounds that I'll be c/s, some will get burned outside and some will be for the shoulder season in a couple of years. Once the cold weather gets here and the trails harden up, I'll put the forks on the tractor so those logs are up in the air. I'm hoping I can get the log pile in the picture 104 1300 in the above post gone before Jan 15 2021. Are you getting any of the new storm coming in?
Looks like whatever we were gonna get has rolled through. No precipitation for the next few days. Sounds like it was some perfect stuff for the outdoor fireplace
I have had some dry pine under a tarp for a period of time so once I start the fire with that, the green pine goes on.
We have some good wind gust today so even though it rained hard last night, the burning will wait until another day.
Probably a good idea. Better safe than sorry! We’re gonna be in the 30s all day. So I may try and get out to do some cutting for another days hauling.
Getting more firewood is never a bad idea. I did hand sharpen six chains, 3 sixteen inch, 2 eighteen inch and 1 twenty inch.
Sounds like you’re ready to go too! Ever gone out in the woods for some firewood and had the thought driving home with a full load that you wish you hadn’t done it? Me neither Maybe the next morning, but not while driving home
The day started out bringing the boss into town so she could ship out a package at the UPS store, since we were in town, I filled up a five gallon diesel can. Once we came home, I decided that the chimney pipe would get cleaned before our first cold snap, that new brush pushed real hard or I'm just getting old. The oil was changed in the new Honda motor on the 20 ton splitter after the cleaning of the chimney and a sandwich. The last thing I did was buck up some downed pine logs with the 390, I'm going to drop the rakers more. I also bought a rubber mat for the back of the RTV so the saws and stuff won't slide around. Pictures 1305 & 1306 is a meal the wife cooked the other day, 1306 thru 1309 are the first log I bucked up, 1310 is the mat and the last two pictures are the last pine I bucked up. The area in the last two pictures will need to be cleaned up real good before the first big snowstorm.
Today I split four loads of pine and then brought it over to the outside fireplace. After I started the fire, I ran around the trails picking up another five loads of dead pine branches that were reduced to ashes.
