Got some free wood

2 months ago I was given a number of a business locally that builds wooden packing boxes and was told they are overrun with cutoffs
At first i wasn't sure because small pieces burn fast but hot in the boiler, not to mention its somewhat labor intensive

So i called the guy in charge and setup a date he would deliver a bin full
Still wasn't sure, lots of 6" and under stuff, and osb

That was 5 bins full ago, and i must say with the crazy warm temps that stuff goes a long way!
On the colder days i put a few poplar logs in with a wheel barrow full and goes all day no problem

For possibly not having enough wood for the winter, i sure am grateful to get this stuff

 

Our crate maker locally has saved me a few times. Last year in particular.
I usually stay away from OSB, but the heat treated pine is useful.

 

Yeah, what glue is in the OSB? Indoor or outdoor boiler? Either way, that OSB probably isn't great to burn.

I throw in a few pieces every load, actually burns well

 

Oh, I'm sure it does burn well. Glue typically does.

Yesterday I did get something for free to trade up to the tree service with. The task yesterday was to help move a load of gravel onto a trail at a nearby state park. 3/4 inch plywood was used for the deliver. The kind that tree guys and excavators have to drive on in peoples yards. It was donated for the job and became unwanted. I grabbed 2 of the pieces with the idea of cutting 16” strips to cover my stacks. The guy who brought the bobcat took the other two.

This morning I sent a photo to my guy and offered him the plywood. As fast as I say yes to free firewood he said he’d be right over.

 

Man, thats a good deal, love bartering!
Ive gotten wood from a local tree service guy, he said there was lots of oak so i figure right on!
When he brought it over i had to tell him it was poplar, oak doesn't have white bark

Would love to get the free loads i see on here from other members, but I think most tree guys do firewood on down time

 

So. A stack of splits, for a sheet of plywood. Sure. I'd make the swap! Best firewood there is - free.

 

More like about a cord. . Got a lot to split still.

That's great! Free wood is free wood, unless it's elm or gum, then it's junk.

 

I like elm, the stuff i have gotten splits better than oak or ash

Modern OSB products are supposedly formaldehyde -free and as such are safe to use, burn and landfill.
The sawdust collected from cutting it is supposedly safe to treat as normal wood sawdust.
Probably different rules for ZIP=type coated panels.

Dunno about plywood, especially outdoor/marine types.

 

Several years ago i ran into a similar deal. Only it was 2x4's and lots of them, all kinds of different lengths of them. So many in fact i built my wood shed with them, and boy is it ever sturdy. They were experimenting with finger joints and glue. Some were short ones, others were 10-12 ft long. I took as many as i could and might still have a few of them some place. The guy who was running the show was the owner, he really got good at making some longer ones and the darned things are still firmly glued in the joints. Never have had one fail. Deals like that are hard to beat.
