Took apart my Stihl 028 WB AV today after watching a video last night and seeing how a neglected needle bearing just disintegrated into a mess that jammed up the clutch sprocket.

It was pretty easy - removed one screw holding the plate covering the oiling hole, a few T25 or T30 (can't remember) screws holding the plastic plate in, and carefully removed the c-clip on the sprocket.

When I pulled the plastic cover off I was surprised to see a white plastic gear fall out. I figured out pretty quick that was to turn the oiling pump. It was pretty darn dirty in there but I guess not too bad for 35 or so years old.

Cleaned it up carefully with a microfiber cloth and some carb cleaner and also used a wire brush a few times.

Used a bit of white lithium grease for the plastic oil pump gear as well as the needle bearings. My tree guy happened to stop by and I showed him what I was doing and he interjected and said "You know, you can just buy one of those grease guns and push the grease right into the spindle...." I told him I ordered a 3-pack of the Oregon grease gun....but that upon inspection of the spindle I did not see a second hole on the shaft!

    Pretty dirty.....

Here's that white plastic gear for the oil pump. You can see the needle bearing on the shaft on the 2nd pic.

Used snap ring pliers to get.......the snap ring out.

Good thing I took everything apart. Turns out my chain tensioning bolt is bent! Kind of hard to tell in the pic but it won't turn past a certain point.

    Cleaned up.

This plastic piece is cracked pretty badly on the inside of the bar cover. I wonder if they sell just that part.......

Sharpened 3 RS 18" chains today as well.

Man that air filter gets dirty quickly.

That plastic piece ( 1118 656 1500 ) is NLA from Stihl . You may be able to find it at chainsawr.com ,or ebay , etc ... . Or, maybe pull it off ,and repair it with super glue ,and epoxy .

Yeah , it can get kinda out of hand . I’m currently waiting for a 462RCM from a porter . Should have it in about a month . Fairly certain that this may be the last saw I buy .
Escape clause for that last sentence :^^^^^ ( Only if the husky 592xp is a dud . )

I'm genuinely curious - there's just no way you get to use all the saws do you? And how the heck can you keep track of what pitch, dl, and gauge for chain for each saw? I'd have to have a spreadsheet....... And how do you keep track of the maintenance..........

There’s a few that I tend to run more than the others . But, they all get their run time . Except the Mac 15 ... it’s just nasty tempered ,and not at all pleasant to run for a long time . And the NOS PM 700 ,because it’s never been fueled . Chains ,and bars are kept on pegs ,and ID’d. As to maintenance, when they are brought in from use, the are cleaned and serviced . Pretty simple really .

Well , you have to look at it like this : you start off with one saw . then you get a limbing saw .then you think “ hey , I could do a whole lot more work ,in less time if I bought the spitfire fireball 70cc saw . Then you start getting into repairs ,and chain sharpening . Then you get on a forum ,or 3 ........
It’s a slow insidious process . You don’t even realize you are a victim of it .
I’m going to go out on a limb here with a prediction .
Some day ,you are going to be posting something to someone on a forum . And the person you are talking to will say “ Darn ! You have a lot of saws ! “ :D

If you don't use the you don't maintain them.

Guys like him will take a truckload of them to a GTG to run. Most of those guys just run them then clean them then put them away untill next time. Or just set them in a corner dirty till next time.

I have nothing like those guys and I can't use and don't seem to have the time to fix ones that I want too.

Grease that bearing every 20 tanks or so. Probably once or twice a year for most firewooders. Nice looking saw.

Thank you for the interval recommendation and for the compliment on the saw. I'm very grateful to have it even though I sliced my finger open just now on the chain that was sharper than I thought (was pulling the sheath off and stupid me ruined my sheath the other day when I started the saw with the sheath on - oops).

I will do my best to take care of it.

It reminds me of guitars. I have a double bound custom fender shop dakota red tele with a rare rosewood fingerboard....and I haven't recorded one song with it and it's been sitting for 15 years or more. Trying to sell it to a neighbor.

I haven't put it for sale yet....but it's currently at my neighbor's house. He is an avid guitarist and guitar collector and I told him to make me an offer I can't refuse....... Fingers crossed!
