Just joined, so I thought I'd post a long hello to get started.
In the past year I've taken to harvesting as much of my own firewood as I can. I only go through ~2 cords (for now) in the firepit/fireplace for enjoyment, so I can pretty much make do with what falls in neighbor's yard and the small patches of woods nearby. Around here that's mostly hickory, oak, maple, black locust, and beech.
There is a big double-trunk shag hickory tree that fell in June that I'm going to be bucking and hauling home to split. Perfect for fires AND the smoker! And a neighbor has been slowly removing a huge oak from their backyard, which I snag the chunks as the service bucks them up.
But as I'm getting more and addicted to this, I need to get better at identifying types of wood so I know what's worth hauling home and not. So I'll be lurking and absorbing as much as I can, and hoping for some winter storms to knock down some good trees.

Welcome, it's addicting! I thought I was pretty good at tree ID my whole life but there are far too many native trees that stump me.

Welcome. I'm so sorry that you cant seem to find a good selection of woods to choose from, but keep at it and maybe you can land that big Elm or Cottonwood someday. :D

    Welcome aboard. :handshake:

I am in agreement with Sinngetreu about the wood you have hoarded so far. Maybe you can add willow, aspen and basswood to your stacks.
