I pulled out the Champion 34-ton hydro today since I had a bunch of spruce rounds to split. I split them into these super thin wedges and that just makes life so much easier when using the hatchet. I have used my maul in the past but I can't get them this thin and consistent. I found some sap pockets and man even got a huge one using the splitter. I scooped all that stuff up and rubbed it all over my maul, axe, and hatchet handles. I love the smell and I love the grip. It doesn't last that long but it's lovely while it lasts.
Here's a quick video of me making the wedges. The quality is crappy because it's from my Ring security cam.
That is some sticky stuff. Bet it smelled great! The gas cap on my 170 is still covered with it. Maybe years before it comes off. Never have tried to remove it.
I have tons of spruce gum. I'm going to try it out. It smells amazing buZZsaw BRAD. I have one of the wedges on my desk that has a bit of sap on it and I just pick it up every once in a while and a get nice big whiff. Chew on this: spruce gum
Just use care when sniffing or you may unwillingly wax some nose hair/moustache! Let me know on the gm, not that ill try it. Bet it does wonders for tarter build up!
Yeah having it stuck in my nose is actually something I wouldn't mind!!! Hahahahaha. That 2nd to last pic - I can definitely maybe use an old strainer and steam it up, remove some of the bark and tiny bits of wood......give it a whirl!
I have two boxes (50lbs each) of fatwood already......And this spruce is loaded with resin as well (just not as much as the fatwood).....and once dry it lights right up! I'm guessing the spruce gum tastes rather bland.......which reminds me of the time that my friend from Nepal gave me yak cheese (basically petrified goat milk) that tasted like nothing and took 8000 hours to dissolve in your mouth ahahahahaha.
Nice. I'm still on my hunt. Found a couple small pieces, but nothing substantial yet. Someday though.....
I have no complaints about Cedar kindling, it works Great, is nice and Clean and Dry, I just split up 2 of those clear 12 gallon totes with the flip lids, on Sunday, and still had about 3/4 of one stihl full so we should be good on kindling for awhile As to the Scent of fresh cut/split wood, the neighbors have commented on enjoying the smell when I bring home a fresh load after wood cutting, usually Fir, Douglas Fir being my favorite scent Doug
I’m still burning the cedar clapboard siding I removed from my house a few years ago. Split small abs cut short it makes great kindling.
Man I'm not sure I like having extras of something more than I do kindling. LOVE IT. Assuming it was unstained and unpainted, yah? If only we humans could breakdown the beta 1-6 glycosidic bond in the beta glucose - then we, too, could enjoy eating wood. It looks delicious to me....but I'm sure if I tasted it it wouldn't taste so hot. hahahahahahaha.
Yes it’s raw wood. I believe they applied linseed oil originally in 93’ when it was built. Nothing since and I started burning it in 2019, so 26 years later. Most of it was cracked and cupped from lack of maintenance by the PO.
What a mess! I also used the splitter to whittle down some rounds of white cedar much the same as you did. I'll finish them to size as needed for the inside stove.
I had quite the opposite reaction.....I acted like I found a treasure or hit the jackpot! I love that stuff....haha! Nice! I just love the smell of cedar/juniper. I would literally get high snipping fresh splits of juniper.
Put that resin in a plastic container, let it dry a while, and burn a small amount at a time as incense. There are little charcoal puckies, as used for censers in various religious ceremonies, that work very well for that. Many other resins (white pine, fir etc,) make for awesome incense. Start with a wee piece, it makes a lot of smoke. Sca
Thanks I will try that! Btw I shoved a chunk of the sap directly into my mouth today......and it was very creamy, not sweet at all, very woody, and I didn't like it. So I spat it out and rubbed it all over my hatchet handle and swished my mouth out with some red gatorade. Hahahahahaha.
I split all the kindling today. Yee haw! Here's my homemade kindling station. Works really well. The IBC tote is just up the stairs to the right about 8 feet away. That's about 1/3 full.
