I had opened up the louvers on the MS180 muffler a while back, didn't see much gain though. Finally pulled the muffler and drilled 2 1/2" holes in the section behind the louvers. It really cuts much better now. Seems like it's burning more gas too. I'm still running the stock bar and chain, semi-chisel, .46 gauge. Might try 3/8 lo pro.
    Kinda proud that it worked.

That's a quite a bit more robust than my unmolested 180.

Sounds good too. Muffler Mods can be very easy and they do wake up modern saws that have been choked down for emissions.

    :salute:

No need to :emptywallet:. All my MMs have been home brew $0 modifications and I've been very satisfied with the results.

It was easy to do, if you want to fix it.

Did the MM for the trail saw MS170. It was easy.
The baby sounds like my 440, without the weight, speed, or torque.
No porting; the 170 is too tiny.

I mod these saws quite a bit, I just did a 171 and bumped the timing along with the muffler mod, it's worthy of 50 gauge PS chisel chain now. Good runner for what they are.

They make a High Output oil pump for these 1123 series saws, it's a pain to get in and set at the correct height, you either have to buy the tool stihl sells or get creative but it's well worth it considering these series saws aren't known to oil well.

1123-640-3201 is the part number for the .065 stroke pump if anyone is interested.

It's a clamshell design as well, so porting options aren't as great either.

Thanks. It seems to oil pretty good for now. I might see if my dealer can help if I decide to change it.

How does one tune the carb on a 170 and 180 after a muffler mod? The stock carbs on my saws don't have 3 adjustment screws.

I've lightly modded my 044, 036, and 026. They are all old enough that the mufflers weren't very restricted from factory. I keep the flame arrestor screens because they are required to run on government property.

Only one carb screw on this 170. Not very "adjustable" anyhow.
It doesn't seem worthwhile since it runs well, to change to a fully adjustable carb or better oiler ( add thin oil )..
For most the 170 is a simple tool with limited uses.

I didn't have to adjust it. I usually run a little heavy on the oil mix anyway...

22 bucks is a small price to pay for your bars and chains to last longer, and if you go up to PS/PS3/PM .050 gauge chain which these saws are capable of after a few mods and the HO pump fills the rails up better and makes the saw 10x better than what it is from the factory.

Did you get the OE pump? I will probably upgrade bar and chain when they wear out...

You mean OEM ? yes. If you want one let me know.

I don't really like the .043 gauge PMM3 chain, it doesn't last near as long as .050 gauge PS and it's harder to file.

That's what I meant...lol...I was looking at the different ones on EBay. Yes sir, I would like one, especially if it will do better on the bigger chain.
I have even put that .043 chain on the grinder, did a good job on it.

I'll let you know Monday buddy.

Start doing your homework on 1123 pump installation..170/1 - 250/1 it's pretty much all the same.
