I get black birch now and then. I have maybe a half cord stacked. It's funny, it seems to grow heavily in certain areas, and other areas, none.

Split all the rounds today. Covered them to keep dry. Maybe can move to stacking tomorrow after the rain ends. IMG_3507.JPG

Has the law ever been interested in what you are doing? I don’t think they care as long as they don’t think an accident is going to be caused, but I’ve also never scrounged as much as you from roadside and am interested to know if they have ever run you off.

Once in a blue moon they stop. Had one pull up behind my PU while i was cutting on an off ramp last month. I was running the saw and was 50' away. Pretended not to see him and waited for the door to open which it didnt. Next thing i know he pulls away. Been booted a couple times in many years.
Im very careful how i park and work. Flashers going, ill use a safety cone at times. If its too dangerous, ill pass. Not worth it.

There are laws on the books in CT addressing this explicitly, and to the best of my knowledge every state has their own policy on this. Ultimately it's up to law enforcement to decide whether or not to enforce it. I follow the same safety protocol as Brad here and I agree with him philosophically on the moral end of taking roadside wood that was felled by the state and left to rot. Is it illegal? Technically yes. Is it the same as taking wood from a residential yard? I don't think it is. I've been spotted cutting roadside before and very rarely do I get hassled. The biggest reason the state doesn't want you doing it is safety and liability. Be smart about it, don't endanger yourself or other motorists, don't obstruct the roadway and I don't see a problem.

It's crazy how whole trees got chipped. I mean, I get it... It's a busy highway and they want to work fast. I'm sure they don't want people parking in the left breakdown lane and grabbing wood! But still, tough to see that those BTUs just get chipped. At least haul it away and sell it? Oh well.

Brad, one of these days, I'll probably see you out there cutting!

In an age where everything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law, it's best put disclaimers on everything you say online :) I may add that to my signature actually

If it was an F250 or larger i would. I used to deliver a full cord of splits in my old F150. I had plywood sides up to the racks.

This has been an education for me. Where I live, I don't think I have ever seen anyone scrounge for wood along highways, etc. Of course it has never occurred to me to scrounge wood because I have never had to do it for wood cutting opportunities. But I can see how others might need to.
