Wood is light in weight and has a distinct smell that I can’t really describe. No leaves as these logs were dropped off.

    Kentucky Coffeetree final answer
If it splits like saltines than I’d be more confident in my answer. Wood color and growth rings look right and it has a unique smell.

Reminds of some stuff I picked up a while back. Pretty sure it was Siberian elm. Split pretty easily and became pretty light. Had an interesting smell too. Not bad.

Just how do saltines split? This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten some of this wood just first time I asked. It splits as easy as sassafras

Growth rings are more open or porous on the wood I have plus I’m in NJ

It is comparable to splitting sassafras

I say catalpa. The smell is unique but not unpleasant IMO. I also noticed the center pith on your round as well as mine.

I compare catalpa to sassy in terms of splitablity factor, wood weight and texture.

Load of catalpa i cut last Spring. Note: far right vertical log is Eastern red cedar. IMG_2405 (1).JPG

I saw catalpa at a guys place that had a little mill. What he called catalpa looked much nicer than this but what from what you guys are saying is catalpa, I would agree

It looks very similar to the Catalpa I've been cutting here as well. Fast to dry & process, fairly low btu's.

That's what I was going to say, Brad's pics sure look like same tree! You guys kill me how you have such big trees in your areas. But, we grow bigass gators. And skeeters. And cottonmouths.
