Love that idea. I have some peanuts that sat around too long for us, I'll chop em in the blender and put em out tomorrow.

I've had whole peanuts in birdseed mix and I think it keeps the jays away from the feeder for awhile.
They haul off a nut into the woods and peck away at it awhile before returning.

Crazy doves have been taking baths in the birdbath. I'd have thought it might be too cold for them to do that now.

When ever we have had a bird feeder out, the Blue Jays packed everything away so campinspecter put chicken wire around the main feeding tray. The smaller birds could get in to get the seed and the blue jays just got what ended up on the ground. Blue Jays seem to cache the seed and then come back for more. We had a juvenile blue jay that could get through the chicken wire until one day he got a surprise as he had grown too big. Fortunately he didn't get stuck.

How to discern a crow from a raven? I read the description on the internet but still not sure what these big black birds are out here. I would call them a crow but they are just so big, and I never grew up with crows anyway, maybe crows are that big?. Only magpies and sparrows.

Best way to discern a crow from a raven is by their call.

    Distinctly different.

Sizewise I don't think you'd be able to tell from a distance.

Not that you'd be able to notice from a distance, but the head and beak are dissimilar.

I'm not certain of this.. but I don't think ravens congregate the same as crows do. Which is called a "murder"

As a general rule.....ravens mostly travel in pairs, where crows are mostly seen in larger groups.

I had to quit feeding the birds a couple of months back. My visitor would not stop coming around.

    What's going on brother ?
I have some rubber buckshot that helps them decide to hang out elsewhere. If you need it, let me know.

We have one every year in the spring time. I quit feeding the birds once her takes out the feeder. Wait a few weeks then start feeding again. Normally don't see em till next year.

Trying to get settled in for mountain living. I had a bear last night that would not leave. Wish I would have had some of your rubber buckshot.

Watching the silhouette of a bird on front porch string lights, tail looks like a Barn Swallow though they all left months ago. Then pup plasters herself with front paws up high onto the back sliding door glass (we have a mud nest right there). Sure enough several (likely more) Barn Swallows here. Hope they make it where they are supposed to go before the cold comes back, warm Chinook winds here lately but not for much longer.

I wonder if that is their mud nests? Or do they borrow who ever's nest ?

We have a swallow that likes to build a nest on the light fixture over our front door. Moss & mud on the rug when they build then droppings when the eggs hatch. We tolerate it. They like to fly off and land on the corner of the ladder racks on my PU. Bird poop on the truck all the time then! :picard:

Female red-bellied woodpecker. The pic is washed out a bit with sunlight. Seems to be almost a daily visitor. We have pine siskins here now. I have some other pics on the digital camera.
