Field edge clean up

Went out along the edge of my fields today and cleaned up a standing dead Elm and some small Ash and Red Maple got about a half a cord CSS.



Glad I have hydraulics for this Elm

 

Nice work. That is some stringy stuff. How do you like the shelf on the DHT splitter? I keep thinking of getting one to save bending over picking up splits that fall and have to get split again.

 

Nice job..I can still never understand why folks split Elm....Let it sit 2-3yrs and burn whole...Been doing it for years..

 

As you see I have a shelf on both sides I like it because I hate bending over to pick up wood off the ground.
It makes it nice for working alone.

Some nice wood. The elm splits be called "shreds" when they split like that!

 

I did that for alot of one winter. Every night i would put a round or two of elm similar to the size of roll of paper towel. I loved it, burned real nice.

 

That last pic is a doozy. Must be fun stacking too.

Went out and did some woodlot clean up Red Maple, Yellow Birch, Ash. The maple and the YB had the tops blown out and the Ash was EAB kill.

Not sure if this applies to you but I’ll toss it out there.
Last winter and spring we did a lot of field edge clearing. It had never been done that I can remember. Anyway lots of Tree of Heaven had to come down. Dropped them into the field of course, it’s easier that way. Must’ve been seeds on the trees. Little trees of Heaven popping up all over the field now. Just something to think about. I won’t be dropping them into the field anymore

 

If i recall right, when the tree is damaged or cut down it sends shoots up from its root system in an attempt to regrow.

 

I agree. I split several cords of elm every year. I've never had any trouble with it being stringy. I see pictures on here of stringy elm all the time. I just haven't experienced it.

 

I agree, probably not seeds but the roots sprouting. I pour some glyphosate on the stumps right after cutting them per our state forester. But I still end up fighting sprouts from the root system sometimes even a couple years after I cut and poisoned them. I'm surprised by how far from the stumps some of the shoots are and how many sometimes. He has a total vendetta on Tree of Heaven and every time he stops by he checks the areas he has marked on his map to make sure I have totally eradicated it. Personally I'm more down on grapevine, multifloral rose, hawthorne, and honeysuckle bushes.

Went out and cut this Poplar that blew down last spring.

 

Nice weather for outside cleanups.

Laying in more firewood, is always a good thing.
