Starting to put together a stack finally. I have just started cutting and splitting wood myself for my fireplace and firepit. I think my stack is ~3 ft tall by 8 ft long (average) so far. On the left hand side is gum and some oak I got for free off Facebook marketplace, right hand side is all maple I had from a tree cut at our house. I still have some maple left to split and a ton of poplar left to split to add to it (wheelbarrow in those pics for size reference). Compared to splitting the gum, splitting poplar is like child's play.

    Stack so far:

Stacks of poplar rounds left to cut to size and/or split:

So far, a fun, rewarding hobby. Looking forward to continuing to learn from the experts on this forum!

Looks like a good start. It’s nice to step back and admire your hard work afterwards. Nobody’s hoards were accumulated overnight so keep up the good work and enjoy the process! Good to have you here.

"Just when you think you have enough wood, go get 5 times more."

Yep, was in the same position you were are in a few years ago. I too have a fire place and a fire pit.
I started off buying wet wood from suppliers that said it was dry and was not, smoked my house out more than once. Then found this website/community, picked up a splitter/other wood related tools and currently have 5 solid cords on hand.
    It’s quite addictive. Lol

Got to start somewhere. I started when I was 12, by gathering up rounds that were cut on a neighbor's property, so we can use it for camping. Then at my friend's house for also camping. Then about 12 years ago when I finally got a vehicle I could haul more than a couple rounds in, I started stashing it on my friends property for camping and home fire pit use. 3 and a half years ago I bought a house with a bit over half an acre, not much compared to some, but I am making it work. I installed a wood stove, and I am seriously infected with woodhoarderitis. I have rounds from 2 years ago that I keep burying with new stuff, I have about 4 cords needing split and stacked, and I keep looking for more. Is it a problem if I keep putting off processing what I have, to go get more? That might be a serious symptom.
Welcome to the forum, and enjoy all the firewood knowledge from everyone.

    It’s a rabbit hole.
Wait till you are taking a special someone out on an evening out( if we ever get to again) all dressed up and you “just have to” stop and load some roadside hardwood just laying there.
Or she walks into your shop and sees not one but TWO more splitters that were not there last week along with the Timberwolf splitter out in the yard.
Or the dump trailer that now has a winch and arch to pull logs into.
And a log rite hookaroon AND the log ox system so one could stay in the truck and one on the tractor.
Let’s not forget the tractor. Now a Kubota with grapple and remotes to carry a splitter and a wood carryall box in addition to the 64 ford tractor that was originally bought for 700 bucks “ just to make handling firewood easier “.
And the two chainsaws, the fiskars axe and maul, every chainsaw sharpening gadget made, and and and....

As you've all mentioned, yes I've been bitten by the bug. My wife frequently says I am "obsessed" with splitting and messing with all things firewood in the back yard haha.

MikeyB - I am in the same boat essentially, bought some wood from a local supplier and the stuff came in looking like it had just been split. Ended up sourcing some better stuff to hold me through this season, but I don't want to deal with it anymore, plus I have figured out how easy it is to scrounge up stuff for free that would otherwise be thrown out. So starting next winter I won't be dealing with anymore local suppliers with subpar wood.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words. Looking forward to hoarding much more than my current stack!

Now is the time for better health. Breaking a sweat is a great way to keep the immune system in top shape.
Work with a vigor I find it’s the better alternative to going to the gym and having young gals leering at me

The beginnings of a great hoard! Love that two wheeler. Never owned one til i got one late last year and love it.
Splitting gum? Should be an oxymoron. Tried it once and on my "do not take" list

Yeah I was borrowing a neighbors cracked plastic 4 cu. ft. single wheel wheelbarrow, worried about the thing breaking the entire time I used it, and after it tipped a few times and dumped firewood where I did not intend, I was like it's time for me to invest in something more robust. We just moved into a house so still acquiring all of the homeowner staples. But yeah very happy with the two wheel steel wheelbarrow.

Ive wrecked a plastic one in the cold being to rough. Mine is plastic and was a CL (Craigs List) score for $30. Its weird using a two wheeler then using a one wheeler. I have a tendency to grossly overload them too! Looking forward to seeing your hoard come together! :stacker:

Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor. We have several members from the great state of NC, I'm your next door neighbor in GA. Nice start on your hoard. I'm like buZZsaw BRAD ,had some smaller black gum, it split ok on the splitter, did one big round, decided I would use the gas on better wood.
